Important issue with character transfers

I recently bought a character on the eve character bazaar.

Upon logging into the new character was a notice of a contract pending.
It was an overdue courier contract. Luckily there was no collateral.

The issue i see is someone trading a character with a courier contract with a 2Billion collateral. When the contract fails under the new owner the new owner's character's wallet can go negative 2billion balance.

Is it possible that all contracts are dissolved during the character transfer process?

The collateral is subtracted from your wallet when you accept the contract, not when you fail it. This in your case means that the character would have lost the money before the character sale.

There is no way to end up with a negative wallet, outside of GM actions.
