Hi guys, do any of you work in the oil industry? I'm looking to get out of this dump I live in and make some real money. I've been told by several people Halliburton in ND is a good place to look at. I currently live in Ohio, and don't really care where I move to, as long as there's work.

My questions:
What do I apply for? I'm looking for whatever no-experience required job I can find, but most of the listings are 'technically specific', IE: Mechanic Technician I, Service Operator II - Service Tools, Material Handler-Bulk Plant, etc etc.

On a plus: I can re-obtain my Class A CDL w/ Hazmat, and get double/triple and tanker endorsements if needed. (Had a Class A CDL for maybe 3 years, drove for 1)

Would I be better off calling Halliburton and asking them directly what to apply for?

Living Situation: Will Halliburton assist with relocation costs? If not, are there nice enough people in the area to let me move in w/ no deposit if I guaranteed have the job?

I'd be able move as soon as next week if I get hired; I want out of this poop chute desperately.

I heard its pretty redicouls up there in ND, was like 3 months since I last heard of it though. They want more skilled people, since work will actually get done there, but who knows.

They had really wierd housing and stuff like that up there. Its more encampment then anything. You might want to check up on that before you go there as well.

I know several people working on the north sea oil platforms, work for 2 weeks, and 4 weeks off, paid really well too.

If I cared for the oil industry I would likely be doing something similar myself.

If I could get a job locally making any sort of decent money NOT at a factory, I would definitely be doing that. Unfortunately, local businesses have their head up their arse and refuse to hire people without 'paper cred'; then complain to the local population about how everyone applying is failing drug tests.

1) They refuse to give people like myself who honestly do know what they are doing an honest chance
2) They refuse to disclose the most common drug found (my speculation is pot)

Wait, this seems to be the norm anywhere I look. I would LOVE a job in the IT field, being that I have done all sorts of IT work for the past 15 years. Hell, I've squashed virus's that hi-jacked the entire system to the point where I thought the easiest solution was to buy a new hard drive. A 30 pack of beer and 6 hours later, I had the original hard drive running, with all the original drive contents, without the virus. This was after several days of taking it to 'professionals' that said it simply said it couldn't be done, and recommended I buy a new drive. When I took the same drive back in, fixed, they were flabbergasted at how I did it, yet wouldn't accept an application from me because I did not have a BA in CS.

On another note, I went to a radio shack asking for specific parts; and when asked about what I was building I told them I was building a parallel port adapter to recognize a PSX controller. They laughed at me and told me it was a waste of money. I laughed when I brought this back in to them.

I don't think everyone here in Norway is so high on their horses that they never hire anyone without a degree, but form what I have seen in US, it can be very different.

Sounds like you know what you are doing, ever though about starting something by yourself?

I worked at the plants in Texas. Somewhere around Port Arthur I think.
Lots of oil refineries there. They are doing some new expansion and have over 10k people in one unit.

This is definitely a dying art and something definitely not taught in schools. I'm the only person in an IT department of 120 able to reliably rip a virus out by hand, because I've been doing it since Windows 95 viruses came about. You have to be a tinkerer to acquire skills like that, and lots of tinkerers never get that degree.

I'm doing okay without the BA, though I'd be a lot better off with that stupid little piece of paper.

Aren't you getting more shiny nuclear plants up there in Ohio?

I remember when I was in highschool, the 'IT guy' accused me of trying to 'hack' the network username/passwords, by showing me an 'encoded' file he found under my username. After de-encoding it and showing him it simply showed the login/logoff times, I was banned from the school PC's. This was 2005. I've been doing this since I was 6. Started with my dad's old Compaq 486 or whatever it was at the time. He bought some new RAM and when he installed it, the PC suddenly didn't boot. I took a look, and asked him to swap the position of the sticks (had 1, got a 2nd) and try to boot. He laughed at me, said 'Yea like that'll do anything'. After he tried it (and saw it worked) he went out and bought me a NES like I had wanted. It's safe to say I am the last of a dying generation of tinkerers, until my kid is old enough to acquire the same skills.

If by nuclear plants you mean casinos, then yes. We just got 4. Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, and Cincinatti. But seriously, as far as nuke plants, I have no idea.
