Obviously this would mean in its current state. I guess things could change depending on the nature of upcoming Hybrid changes.

I know many sing the praises of the Nighthawk, or sleipnir. But I never hear anything about the Astarte or Eos, nor have I even seen one flying.

I am guessing due to the nature of Hybrids, they are just not very popular ships to train for, but I could be wrong, which is why I am asking.

The problem with Gallente command ships is twofold:
1) Hybrids as you said.
2) The bonuses they provide are among the least useful. Caldari/Amarr provide shield/armor bonuses. Minmatar provide mobility/tackle bonuses. Gallente provide ewar bonuses. The first three are more generally useful, whilst the Gallente bonuses kinda requires you to tailor your fleet to those bonuses.

The astarte can make a decent pvp ship, since it has good dps and enough mobility to catch larger targets, but the eos is almost never seen. The only one I've ever come across was an offgrid booster in an incursion fleet.

Gallente CS are pretty awful. Or rather, the Eos is totally awful and the Astarte is kinda sub-par. I'm not gonna spend any time on the Eos but I'll take a quick look at the Astarte which is more an exercise in disappointment in failure to achieve potential than anything else.

Well to start here is a slot layout like the Hurricane. Considering how awful an active armor tank is that leaves us indifferent to how we tank it. It could mount an OK shield tank with a EM hole that needs to be plugged badly. It could mount an OK armor buffer tank with an explosive hole that needs to be plugged badly. And there's the option to active armor tank if you want to set up for solo play. That's not a bad set of options. Here are the numbers
Shield Buffer 56K EHP -> 50K EHP with nanos
Armor Buffer 80K EHP with 2 damage mods
Active Armor 46K EHP / 500 DPS repped using dual MAR and 1 damage mod

That gives us slightly better buffers than a Hurricane with the ability to active armor tank unlike a Hurricane. However for comparison a shield buffer Sleipnir boasts 70K EHP.

Now the major difference in slot configuration between the Hurricane and the Astarte is the utility highs. The Astarte has none. This is awful. The Hurricane's 2 medium neuts are a massively valuable asset. In exchange the Astarte gets a better drone bay. Probably it should fit 5 ecm drones and 5 lights. This is nice and begins to make up for the lack of utility high but it doesn't fix the problem.

The damage output of the ship is generally around 900 DPS. That impressive for a battlecruiser. Its not impressive at 1K optimal and falloff that means you need to be about halfway into web/scram range to not loose significant chunks to falloff penalties. Its not impressive for having to burn capacitor and being unable to choose damage types. But its still probably better than a Hurricane. Even with generous application of TEs the Astarte is going to have trouble trying to kite outside of web/scram, and it has to give up slots for nanofibers if it wants to try. Nanos are vital for kiting.

With 2 nanos a minmatar bc will go around 1600m/s. The Astarte can manage 1300. ****.

So the Astarte as a shield nano boat is a pretty **** substitute to a Sleipnir. Its slower with less EHP, no utility high, and while it has more damage it has a much greater difficulty in getting damage on target.

As an armor ship the Astarte is ok. But the only advantage it brings over a cheaper battleship that has more EHP, Damage, and EWAR is its medium sized weapon tracking. I'd rather be flying a Megathron with the same scram/web/mwd/cap booster midslots and a heavy neut in the utility high.
