Advancing to lvl 2 missions

Hello all. I'm a relatively new player in Eve. I still don't know what's where. I became an Eve university member right after finishing the tutorials but I haven't been able to do anything with it. My schedule is very different to their callendar and they never match.

Anyway, I've only been doing level 1 missions for some time now. I have a Rifter and recently I've been able to do these missions without a problem. So, I thought I'd advance to level 2 missions. The very first level 2 security mission I got, I tried to approach some pirates to kill. They simply fired two rounds of missiles at me and I was killed even before reaching them. I thought that I'd be able to approach them, kill at least one, move away, recharge and attack again. Killing one at the time might help. But I didn't even manage to get close.

What should I try to do? Try with a different spacecraft? Try to get better shield generator? I think I have a small one for the time being. Should I get missiles too? Which ones? Some rockets I'm using are close range.
Any advice welcomed. Thank you

Rule of Thumb:
L1: Frigate
L2: Cruiser
L3: Battlecruiser
L4: Battleship

Skills can skew this somewhat.

I'd suggest checking the missions against eve survival, to see what you'll be up against.

Make sure you have a decent tank on your ship. The Eve uni wiki should help there.

We also need to know a couple of things before suggesting anything:

What faction are the pirates your killing in the mission.

How are your fitting rifter? How would you fit a cruiser for lvl 2's

Do you know how to keep your transversal up? Are you tanking your ship properly?

Noir. and Noir Academy are recruiting apply at www.noirmercs.com I Noir Academy: 60 days old must be able to fly at least one tech II frigate. I Noir. Recruits: 4:1 k/d ratio and can fly tech II cruisers.

The best advice is : If your corp is not working out for you, look for one that better fits your needs.
Beginning EVE is not easy and everything is more fun when playing with others.

I actually think many missions are easier in slightly under-sized ships. I've done lots of L2s in a Frigate and various L3s in a Cruiser, back when I first started. Especially my first Level 3 mission, where I lost two Hurricanes, but managed to beat it all in a meh-fitted Rupture.

Thanks a lot for the answers. I'll probably need to join a group that's local or that operates in different times.
The only thing I had (before I died) was a small shield booster but it wasn't working fast enough and a hull repairer that was useless since my capacitor was getting quickly drained. Is there something to boost capacitor efficiency? I'll look into the forums for that.

Ack!

Throw away that hull repper. Use it only to save a little isk on repairs.

The only Tanks you should consider are Armour and Shield (except for /very/ specific situations. Which you won't be in)

Go look at the tanking stuff on the Eve uni wiki. It should help.

That's pretty pessimistic. Even with mediocre skills it's more like:

L1: Frigate/Destroyer
L2: Frigate/Destroyer, possibly Cruiser
L3: Cruiser, Battlecruiser if you're feeling lazy
L4: Battleship, unless it's Recon in which case frigate

There's a lot of mission to mission variation in difficulty as well, and the specific ship you pick will have its own weaknesses.

Generally speaking what I'd overwhelmingly recommend for the bulk of L2s is a Destroyer fitted with long-range weapons, the majority of the enemies tend to be small so the medium weapons on a cruiser are gonna miss a lot until your skills are pretty good.

Mission Guides

Above link gives a walkthrough guide of the missions.

Normally the guide includes a ship recomendation, and always includes damage taken info (for tanking fits) and recommended damage to do.

Not every L2 mission can be done in a Frigate or Cruiser. Other Level missions have similar exceptions also.

Thank you. I've found the accepted mission I'm supposed to do soon. It says:
Recommended ship classes: Cruiser
Recommended generic setup: Assault/Heavy Tank

I just need now to figure out what skills I'm missing and if I have the money to equip myself. :-)

Ehh, only for recon 1-2 IF you're blitzing it, recon 3 in a frig gets you toasted. P
