A Rare Occurrence

Hey everyone, I figured I would share this story, as things like this simply don't happen very often.

I'm pretty new to the game, I've only been playing 3 months and have been experimenting with Mining, PvE, and most recently trading. Anyway, I had just learned about the EVE Gate, and I wanted to see it for myself. I bought a cheap rifter and put an afterburner in it and undocked from Jita.

I was supposed to go with a friend, as I was waiting for him to get set up I noticed some commotion in corp chat. It turns out that someone was 'giving' away a Hulk, Orca, and a Mackinaw. Of course, everyone in corp chat was skeptic. The man was wanting them to meet him in a High-Sec system. Then he was going to leave it in space so the other person could get in and fly it away, it was theirs. (I'm sure there is a name for this, as it seems like it could easily be a scam, I don't know the term though)

Anyway, no one was biting, but that didn't seem to bother him. He seemed like he was genuine. Me, being a new pilot, and having nothing to lose decided to take him up on his offer. I opened up a conversation with him. After determining that I couldn't fly any of the ships, he sent me 50 Million Isk. I was dumbfounded, I thought for sure it was a scam. He didn't tell me to meet him anywhere after that, that was all. Anyway, I decided to fly to him anyway and see what he was up to.

I warped into this system, and he was just sitting there in his Orca. We continued to chat about the game and why he was giving out all of his stuff. He told me that he was quitting, and that he keep renewing every few months just to be disappointed and quitting again. He figured getting rid of all of stuff and deleting his character would solve this problem.

At this point everyone was going ballistic in corp chat. Most people were convinced it was a scam. One person decided to take him up on his offer, they agreed to meet at Jita and he would give the pilot a Hulk. He left for Jita and I left for the EVE Gate. Anyway, they meet at Jita, and he actually gave the Pilot his Hulk. He still had his Mackinaw and Orca left at this point.

After some thought he decided he was going to self destruct his Orca and give everyone a 'firework' show. I was still flying around in New Eden so there was no way I could get back in time to see it. It was getting pretty late anyway so I sent him an EVE Mail thanking him for the Isk and wishing him luck on whatever he decided to do.

When I logged back in this morning I noticed I had a new EVE Mail and a Contract Assigned to me. It turns out he had given me his Mackinaw through a contract. I went and picked it up and plan on raising the skills to fly it soon.

Anyway, I'm not sure if you'll take the time to read this or not. My story telling skills are laughable, but I felt it was nessecary for me to share this. It just goes to show that not EVERYONE is looking to scam you. (Although I'm sure it's something like 98% or so.)

I hope you enjoyed the story and got something out of it. Let me know your thoughts or you can share a similar story, if you have any. o/

Talked to a guy in arnon.

He was trying to get his celestis to work out for a mission. I mentioned getting a thorax instead. He said that he would but needed to use some of the money he was saving for the thorax to get a replacement destroyer. Another guy in local picks up on this and throws the guy 5 mill. The newb was amazed but not as amazed as I was.

Because he offered something similar to me asking which ship I wanted. I meekly respond that I want a bhaalgorn not expecting him to do anything about a 1 bill ship. After he reviewed their prices he says "oh that's a bit high, but how about this?" and dropped 400-500 (i don't remember the exact amount) into my wallet.

At the time this was epic for me :D

That's pretty crazy, I guess there are some generous people out there.

Yeah, I guess 90% of the time it is a scam. But there's always that other 10%. :)

I had a shock once. Was doing the SoE Arc. The mission where you face a BC. Had to ask for help.

Someone came in and helped.

Later that day, I got a contract for an Abaddon.

I was shocked, because I hadn't even hinted that I wanted anything other than that BC killed.

Short of it, some people really are nice, even in EVE.

A player gave me a caracal and a few million isk my first day. Not a huge deal, but nice people exist.
I've given things out from time to time.

Not a forum alt.

I have several times given 100-200 mill isk ships away to strangers.

I once even gave a Scorp Naval Issue (fully T2 equipped) to someone who answered my question in a very helpful way (instead of responding with a stupid non-useful comment) in these very forums. :)

Seems like there are more nice people in-game then I thought. Hopefully when I get rich (I can always dream, right?) I'll be able to return the favor to people.

You don't get it.

The scam is that he gave you a mining ship ...

TBH, the majority(obv I don't have the numbers but w/e)of players are pretty nice.

Just because someone scams you, blows you up, ect doesn't mean they aren't nice. It's a game, I'm going to try to shoot you if I'm out looking for a fight. Doesn't mean I won't help you out at a different time.

As far as scamming goes, just don't fall for scams. Same as above. When they're scamming they're scamming, when they're not actively trying to scam you they're probably perfectly nice.

Edit: Good point post above me, he did give you a mining ship. That is pretty mean.

I plan on living forever.......so far, so good.

It's just ISK. When I'm in Rens I give at least $10m ISK to any noob I chat with. I remember when I was new, Hans Jagerblitzen gave me $25m ISK. It's not that rare.

Why didn't he just dock the Orca and contract it to someone like a decent person would?

Eve too complicated? Try Astrum Regatta.

I once reimbursed a guy who made a forum post about how he got stuck on a Large Collidable Object in his Harbinger and died.

(And no - don't try it - it was fun and he appeared to be a genuine noob and a decent guy who wasn't actually whining, so I thought why not).

I've occasionally given some stuff away - funniest bit is when you create a giveaway contract in noob corp chat, repeatedly post it and noone accepts it for hours because they think it's a scam.

I guess they're usually accepted by alts of more experienced players.

Someone bailed me out when my foray into industrial mining caused me to get attacked by rats with no defense.
Various people have been very helpful with advice.

Otherwise, I've not experienced much random expensive generosity from random people. I've given newbies advice and sent them stuff myself, but small things. Usually a bunch of modules and ammo, and a couple of million isk. A drop in the ocean to me, but nothing that'll unbalance them. Just enough to ease their newbie-ness.

I'm not sure if he ever ended up blowing it up or not, he may have done just that. That's what his plans were last time we talked, as people kept on badgering him about it even though they couldn't fly it.
