OK, so I got a little Asbergers on this. I was just trying to figure out which teams had already made the finals and which ones didn't have a chance. It turns out it's a little complex. Here is an overview of all 32 teams and how much they have to do to make advance to the finals. Please let me know if I made any errors or omissions.

Alliances that have clinched a spot in the finals and can comfortably lose on Saturday:
Agony Empire
The G0dfathers
Mildly Intoxicated
Test Alliance Please Ignore
Exodus.
Heretic Nation
DarkSide.
Raiden.

Alliances that have almost clinched a spot in the finals and can probably lose on Saturday, just not as comfortably:
HUN Reloaded
FEARLESS.
Red vs Blue

Alliances that can clinch a spot in the finals with a win on Saturday,
But will be eliminated if they lose:
Shadow Cartel
Suddenly Spaceships.
Gypsy Band
PERCUSSIVE PIZZA TIME DIPLOMACY

Alliances that don't necessarily need to win to advance, they just need to beat the other teams in the running:
Black Legion. (26.5 point lead over Nulli Secunda)
Nulli Secunda (26.5 points behind Black Legion.)
Verge of Collapse (18 point lead over Capital Punishment.)
Capital Punishment. (18 points behind Verge of Collapse)
Pandemic Legion (39 point lead over Rote Kapelle)
Rote Kapelle (39 points behind Pandemic Legion)

Alliances that must win on Saturday for a chance to be in the finals:
Goonswarm Federation (needs Verge of Collapse to lose and must score 96 points more than VoC, also must score 78 more points than Capital Punishment.)

Alliances that must win on Saturday for a chance to be in the finals, and the alliance must take a handicapped team:
Choke Point (only if Black Legion. gets shut out and they only bring a 89 point team and lose < 27 points to Nulli Secunda)
Kill It With Fire (only if Pandemic Legion gets shut out and they only bring a 69 point team and lose <40 points to Rote Kapelle)

Alliances that don't have a chance at the finals:
Fatal Ascension
Dark Taboo
Alpha Volley Union
Northern Coalition.
Dead Terrorists
The Gorgon Empire
BricK sQuAD.
Ev0ke

Analysis:
Four of the eight groups are clinched already. Of the remaining four, Group G is a straight up do-or-die match for all four teams. Those should be some great fights.

Groups A, D, and H are where things get really interesting. With one team at 2-0, two at 1-1, and one at 0-2, it may seem like a simple fight between the two teams a 1-1 record. However, they're not fighting each other next round, and it's still possible that upsets can happen.

For instance, the teams with a 2-0 record could still get knocked out if they lose and both the 1-1 teams win. This would cause a 3-way tie in the group, with three teams with 2-1 records and one finishing 0-3. The tie would then be decided by points, so if both 1-1 teams outscore the 2-0 team, the 2-0 team could go home. Here's the teams I'm talking about, followed by how many points lead they have over the two 1-1 teams in their group.

HUN Reloaded (111, 137.5)
FEARLESS. (107, 125)
Red vs Blue (50.5, 89.5)

Note that for HUN Reloaded to get knocked out, not only would they have to get shut out by Black Legion., but Nulli Secunda would have to bring a handicapped team to get the 138 points they would need to beat HUN.

On the other end of the spectrum, it's possible that the three teams who are 0-2 could still make it to the finals. To do so, they would need both the 1-1 teams to lose, creating a three-way tie at 1-2. They would then also need enough points to beat both the 1-1 teams. Note that in this scenario, the teams who are 2-0 now would advance with a 3-0 record. The relevant 0-2 teams and their point deficiencies to the other 1-1 teams are as follows.

Choke Point (135, 108.5)
Goonswarm Federation (95, 77)
Kill It With Fire (155, 116)

Long odds on KIWF advancing, but it's still within the realm of possibility.

The 1-1 teams can advance with a win if the other 1-1 team in their group loses. But if both 1-1 teams in the same group win or both lose, then it will come down to points. This is a little crazy as it's possible that a 1-1 team that had beaten the other 1-1 team when they battled could still get knocked out by that team on points.

TL;DR - It ain't over til it's over.

Our Beloved Leader; Space Commander Larkonis has in a fit of drunken Kim Jong-Il roleplay put Snake on gang-link duty for a as of yet, undetermined length of time. We expect him to be allowed back into a civilian electron blaster Velator sometime in February 2017.

EDIT; That said, good post OP.

has it been confirmed that points is more important than having beaten the person you tie with? obviously this doesnt matter in a 3 way tie, since each team will have beaten 1 other team, but in a 2 way tie, is points or the winner of the related battle more important?

For all intents and purposes a draw is like a loss for most of these teams.

There was a Dev post here verifying that the first criteria is W/L/T, second criteria is points. One of the tournament announcers had erroneously explained that in case of a tie, the team who had beaten the other team would move forward.
