Modern ones can with the use of FoF transmitters in the Vehicles/Aircraft.

The main problem was in the early days when they tried to develop autonomous missiles that could distinguish Soviet from Allied aircraft by say the frequency curve of the IR emissions from engines.

Modern ones rely on a data squirt from an on-board marker to identify it as a friend. But just like a tracer bullet that can work both ways Roll

FoF is still shorter than 'Auto-Targeting' when trying to minimise the size of on-screen tables. Also EVE is supposed to be militaristic!

Well technically friend or foe, wasn't always a fat lol, trust me i had a FOF at one day way back when i started that hit a friend in highsec got concorded was quite funny, but ya it shoots foes or friends, so auto-targeting seems wiser, especially since the launchers are already changed.

Except that the "Hull Upgrades" skill gives you +5% Armor Hitpoints per level. I've always thought it as somewhat confusing since Hull =/= Armor in EVE.

Just rename that skill too, then all guides out there is invalidated...

Actually to be even more picky thinking the "HG" is for Hull perhaps its should read "Armor upgrades AG-1004"

just gonna throw this out there - "fire and forget" was the hot new shiny (IRL) when a missile could acquire a target while still on the rail, be launched, and then fly to the target and blow it up without any direct action from the pilot besides pressing the fire button. before that, missiles would be guided (via radio control to the cockpit, laser designator from a third party, or sometimes via wire even) and even 'flown into' their target. in eve, all missiles are fire and forget, even the bombs. you have no control over them once you hit the launch key.
friend or foe (FoF) indicates the missile is not only fire and forget, but also seeks out any hostile target (being defined as red boxed due to hostile actions in eve). The missile decides which targets to go after, in what order, regardless of your wishes at all. (closest thing IRL i can think of is the HAARM missile, just seeks out the biggest RF signal which is most likely coming from a hostile targeting radar. or maybe the old school heat seeking missiles... they go after anything hot... those sluts)

this random bit of knowledge aside, FoF is still way better than "Auto-Targeting". Screen real estate is a big enough problem as it is, let's not add excess verbiage to make matters worse.
