You fight a Tengu as an 'end boss' in Dead or Alive 2 I think it was, you know, the Tekken look-alikie but with crapper controls and no combo chains, much like the older Street Fighters.

Although they take their name from a dog-like Chinese demon (Tiangou), the tengu were originally thought to take the forms of birds of prey, and they are traditionally depicted with both human and avian characteristics.

Been awhile

Each race has a different theme
Caldari - Birds
Gallente - Greek Mythology
Minmatar - Norse Mythology
Amarr - ?????

Not sure about the last one

True but makes you wonder if they actually know how a kestrel or a falcon like we know look like , remember this is 20 000 years in the future

Also since we suppose to have lost all knowledge about where we come from and Earths history
and we went thru a dark age that lasted a couple of thousand years where does the greek and norse mythology comes from

I do not agree with what you are saying , but i will defend to the death your right to say it...... Voltaire

Is it really that hard just to look it up? Tengu translates to 'heavenly dog' but are portrayed as a bird demon.

Edit: All the names come from that fact that CCP(and game devs in particular) will steal names/mythology any chance they can get away with.

As for the races names themselves....

Matar: The name of a Patriach of greek religious significance (maybe referring to Minmatar's close relationship with the....

Gallente: Derivative of Gallant, the French word of Chilvary. That meaning knightly virtue and honour

Caldari: ... no idea

My theory on the whole Amarr race is that they are the result of some serious Icelandic binging.

The Amarr have religious overtones, in extensions the Khanid ships have only names that illustrate a break with faith in accordance with them leaving the Amarr empire and their more liberal convictions.

Heretic
Sacriledge
Malediction

etc.

My 5ct worth.

i'm sure it has been discussed before but what is the deal with the Minmatar Claymore? The Hurricane should be named the Claymore since it is...you know...shaped like a Claymore. That will always bug me.

Also Charon doesn't really fit with the Caldari naming theme. He was a mythological Greek figure but not a mythological monster or bird like the other Caldari ships. The Obelisk should be named the Charon since Gallente ships are the ones that are named after figures in Greek and other ancient myhos. And while obelisk doesn't really fit exactly with Caldari the ship does look a bit like a monolith. So that would be a cool name for it.

Minmatar seem to have the broadest range of names. Norse mythology, bladed weapons, predators, and weather/storm related.

Anyone done any homework on the Jove? or is there a site that has info on them?

They suffer from disease and have had several golden ages but what do they base themselves upon?

Two links through wikipedia that relate to Greek mythology and the Jove ships, and just a hunch:

Are they the people of Atlantis.... in space?
