There are a number of high demand names that are currently tied up by inactive accounts. I had a perfect Harrison Ford in the creator, the closest I could get to Han Solo was Hhan Solo. I think everyone can agree that name bites. However Hän Solo would have been epic.

If our characters can have piercings, why can't our names?

Now with 100% less Troll.

This is the issue here. In WoW it was very problematic to even reach out to anyone who had a single special character in their name. However, since CCP already has a search system why don't they count a special character as the corresponding normal character in the alphabet in the search results? For example, Han Solo and Hän Solo would show up next to each other on an "results as exact string" search for "Han Solo".

Terrible terrible idea. This just opens the door to all sorts of impersonation scams, which are against the EULA.

I do think they should go through and wipe any trial account that wasn't activated after say 6 months or so. I can't even begin to imagine how many good names are taken up by a trial account that is never going to be active again.

no there aren't. you're just not creative enough to come up with one. including special characters and symbols in names is just not a good idea. in fact, it's doing this.

You may want to have that examined by a doctor... there's stuff all over it.

I think special characters are a bad thing for MMO names, mostly for this reason:

Letting people create the thousands of variations on "Han Solo" would be seriously annoying.

There are great names still available, you just have to look for them.

Unicode has 1,112,064 different characters. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I do not think it is possible to programmatically match each latin letter with their associated accented characters. This means, someone would have to go through this list manually and look for all of the a's, b's, c's, d's, e's, etc...

That sounds like a lot of work that I wouldn't want to pay CCP for.

Anyways, we aren't allowed to use copyrighted/trademarked names.

A decent text indexer can do a distance search that turns up visually "near" matches. Not all that difficult. Now configuring the indexer to run at Eve-scale... That's another matter.
