I suppose what I love about the game is that you have to have a little bit of intelligence to start getting into it, any muppet can get in WOW as it's all spoon fed for you but this was like here's a couple of missions so you know how to click stuff and that was it.

After the initial missions you were let loose and it was great, lucky for me I had chaps who had been playing for years as friends and helped me out alot plus I've been lucky choosing really good corps (Hostile,VTEC,XDC) who had/have good members.

What makes EVE so good is the people who inhabit it, long may it continue.

No I've never been to Geekfest although my sister-in-law/nephew are Icelandic and living in Iceland only because it's so bloody expensive to go there even though I would get free board.

well, to start off, I quit playing about 4 years ago, due to rl . I;ll be back in a week or so, due to waiting for cc card payment to clear.
a rl friend talked me into starting, and popped my main toon into his corp(this is my alt) main's name is Taggert Hightower.
guess what corp I got popped into as a newb?
that's right.........Black Ice......from the old Curse alliance. Anyone remember them?
3 weeks into game, I lived, and pretty much stayed in 0.0..........had a LOT of fun fights in a frig against some of the best players in game.........took forever to get my sec status back to where I could go into even low sec
so,I'll be returning, with one toon 18 mill sp's, one with 16 mill sp's, should be great fun

Of course the freedom of choices.

Apart from that i vigorously persuit the daftness. keeps the game big and unknown. I wont get saturated for a long time.

Real noob here, trial started 2011.09.26, upgraded to full account yesterday.

What convinced me to submit?

Somebody can shoot at me, I can shoot at somebody. Depending on where we are police will come or not. And if police won't come we both are allowed to do whatever it takes to win. No rules, no limits. Haven't taste pvp yet but I like an idea that all is possible but also all actions have consequences and if I start with somebody I can and most probably will be put down. Beside if somebody is a jerk I can be a jerk too :)

Free market - well maybe not really free but in great part instrumented and ruled by demand and supply paradigm. No artificial "knight on 50 lvl buy swords cheaper". If something cost 1mil there is a reason for it and reason is related to uniqueness or high production costs not "charisma and tree hugging attitude".

Corps - not very keen of joining any yet but once again, I like an idea that CCP just gives means not limits what you can and can't do with your stuff, your friends, your enemies, your time.

Realtime skills - love it! No need for grinding and being 33 yo with a girlfriend not very keen of me gaming whole night... well, you get a point. Also I like to do other things in my life beside frantically clicking 20 hours a day every day.

PLEX - love it! unlike other MMOs where microtransactions generally spoil fun because if you don't buy this f**ing gun or vest you won't live long enough to see end of battle, in EVE real money just mean I don't have to earn isks to buy stuff. I can afford to buy PLEX and sell it ingame and have funds for my suicidal pvp attempts.

I think that's it.

Well I'm not new anymore.. but as I remember it..

Some friends of mine from Lovecraft MUSH were mentioning it, and I started clicking around the forums for about two weeks, learning how turret tracking worked, and missile explosion velocity and lots of technical things, which I think helped ALOT with that vertical learning curve.

So then I join, do missions for a bit, decide to do some sight seeing, and went to Amarr via Jita. I was blown away by Jita.. so many stations to mission from, and thousands of players in local. Also, this was back during the Privateer days, so there was fighting on EVERY gate I went through. And also just the look of the game, the nebula in the background as I would mine in my Tormentor..

I remember when I bought my first Condor, how I had to go to Niarja to get it.. But I thought it was low-sec, and so I sat in pulse-pounding suspense as I tried to align (before the align button came along) then warp warp warp, why isn't it warping!!, oh **** I forgot to highlight the station!, JESUS somebody just jumped in behind me!!!

I thought I would have a heart attack. It's probably that specific experience that got me hooked.

After that things got silly, I got roped into a noob exploitation corp called Caesarri Industries, which got wardecced two days later by TRAPS. I couldn't make it in a standup fight at the time, so I would just warp from planet to planet leading them all over the region. They caught me eventually, but it was a good time. Eventually I left that crappy corp and learned about the Sansha loyalist roleplay... I really liked the idea of playing a cyborg zombie so I spent a few weeks stalking Izzychan and others.. been Sansha ever since.

I burned out pretty hard about two years ago, and gave the character to my wife.. tried WOW for a while until somebody booted me from a fleet because I didn't have the right "gear score".... and that was when I heard about all the Sansha live events.. I left WOW in disgust and came back home to this harsh, brutal, lovely mistress. I missed her alot more than I thought.

Not to put up for WoW or anything, but it seems to just be a fad to bash WoW mindlessly. Pretty much everything people criticize WoW for exists in EVE.

Couldn't get into that Guild because of your gear?
In EVE you can get denied entry into Corps based on your skillpoints.

Same exact thing.

We're not talking about a guild, we're talking about a gang.. it would be the equivalent of somebody saying "you can't tackle for us since you don't have Estamel's Resplendent Web-o-matic on your Malediction". And that never happens here... Everybody can use more tackle..

Unless of course you don't have jamming skills trained. So we're right back to my point. Thanks. Go try to split some more hairs. Pirate

Obviously i'm not really a noob anymore... But my current favorite thing about EVE is the markets. The fact that 99% (or w/e the % really is) of items are player built is amazing. Also, there is something special about flying a ship that you built yourself. Smile

The thing that impressed me most on day 1 was during the mining tutorials i happened across a hulk and spent probably 15 min staring at it. It was easily 20x the size of my noobship.

The day I foolishly ignored the "your entering lowsec" warning, thinking how bad could it be, and getting blown up immediately on the other side of the gate is also a fun memory. Although i wasn't too happy at the time. Blink

I think maybe that you're missing the point entirely.

I played Wow up until recently and the playerbase has got worse and worse as the game got easier and easier. The abuse got so bad that I gave up randoms all together.

And jamming skills ? Whats that 36mins or so?

Why did I come back?

I got tired of the carrot and stick approach and "running on rails" of the aforementioned MMO , I like the freedom Eve gives me to do whatever I want. I like the fact that if someone talks smack to me I have the option to "kill them in the face" (over and over)
The buzz you get from the knowledge that if you loose the fight , you may lose more than your ship.

No other MMO has given me the pounding heartbeat, the sweaty palms and the amazing buzz I get from pvp'ing in Eve..

And to be fair - I've only just started...

Well, I've tried this game out twice before, first time around I played the trial, then quit 'cause i didn't get anything.. (about three-four years ago :P)

Second time I actually subscribed! Played like two months before I saw the same problems as I've seen with most mmorpgs: What's the point of it all? You get rich, you get the best stuff and that's it..

Then I saw the video "Eve is real.." and started a new trial account, got myself into a sweet corp, got meself a a nice goal (Get a capital freighter filled with marines and take over the universe planet by planet!!! *evul luagh*). Oh, and yeah, I realized pretty soon that Eve is NOT like the other mmorpgs. There is no "end-game", you can't get "the best stuff", sure, you got a titan! Good for you, but you can still die. That's the charm with this game, atleast as I see it, you can do what you want. Not what the game developers want. A good example of this: CCP discovered that players where using the screen in captains for watching their own videos.. If this were any other game, they would consider it "hacking" the game client.. In eve? Well, it could cause trouble when you update, so here's how you do it properly! *Simple explanation + links to how you do it"

That's why I'm gonna live here for quite a while!

I saw this thread a few days ago and paused to collect my thoughts.

This is the third time I have tried a trial in Eve. I was weaned on Traveller PnP and I always thought this would be the best equivalent online. I love complexity and resource management so I thought the game would be a great fit.

The first time I trialled, I got so frustrated with the interface I didn't even play for an hour. I remember I did something to the map and couldn't recover the screen so I decided to stick with the game I was playing. The second time, about 18 months later, I was between games and really needed a fix for my Traveller jones. After the first hour (wherein I managed to keep the screen up) I got a little sour about the graphics. Particularly the lack of a human avatar. I understand the reason for the old way; I just wasn't liking it. I kept the trial going but kept waiting longer and longer to return and eventually the trial ended and I just let it lapse. I hadn't crossed the threshold of interest.

This time. The more human operations avatar was an immediate hook. I know now that this WiS vs. FiS thing has been flaming for a couple of years, but I am here to say that the CQ metaphor is much more engaging than my last foray. The graphics are very nice generally, not just in char gen, and it's easier to keep track of the strategic levels in the game because they are better represented visually. I have a person that I skill up; I have a ship that I fit; I have a computer that I keep track of everything on; and, while not always easy peasy or instantly obvious in an online sort of manner, the interface is much clearer and predictable in those first crucial hours of play.

edit: Access to the forum for trial time was an added factor. Evelopedia links and rookie channel were sehr helpful.

I'm posting for myself, a vet of quite a few years, and the four newbies i've recently convinced to trial in lieu of the much-anticipated winter expansion. Two of them are friends who played EVE in the past and never got out of trial and the other two are ex-WoW players I met on another forum and convinced to come try the dark side. I'll try to stay brief, so up-front here's the toll: One of those four players made it through his trial convinced that he wanted to play for the long-run (purchased a long-term sub), one got just enough enticement from me to try it for another month, and the other two (coincidentally, the WoW players) decided at some point in their trial they were not into it. Here are a few excerpts from what I can recall of their reasons:

CCP Guard wrote:

Assuming you are a new player who recently subscribed from a trial, what was it that convinced you to take that step?

The fellow who bought in hook, line, and sinker was absolutely impressed by the market. He is an accountant and an amature futures/commodity trader IRL, so he really needed no further prodding once I introduced him to the Market forum, a few links to the success stories of the wealthy EVE elite, and I can only assume at this point he's training some social skills and working furiously on an excel spreadsheet.

Conversely, the other fellow, only tentatively interested after his trial, was drawn in more by the big universe and the potential for exploring it. I think he's also got some interest in pvp. From what I could reckon the biggest plus for him was factional warfare. He seems quite smitten with the concept and hopes that the winter expansion will bring in more opportunities for young pilots making their way into the ranks.

CCP Guard wrote:

And what, if anything, that you experienced would have been most likely to prevent you in taking that step?

It's hard to say what drove off the two former WoW players. I'm quite sure the first to leave (a mere 4-5 days into his trial) was unimpressed with the skill training system and the prospect that he would be playing "catch-up," in the world. The second who dissapeared only after his trial was officilaly over was probably just not impressed by the pve avalible to him. I think both were after serious rat-killing or something to that effect, despite the fact that I'd been very explicit about ratting and mission running being the most tedious chore in New Eden.

Personally, I've been anything but impressed for the last few years, but I'm very excited by the winter expansion. I've been in npc nullsec for the last few years in order to both enjoy smaller scale pvp and avoid the drama of sov. It would be thrilling to have a reason to rejoin old friends in a sov. alliance, but i'd be just as pleased if FW got some serious love too.
