Im not sure what to do in the game. I have done all the career missions, but im not sure where to go from there. I want to mine, but the retriever is insanely expensive, not to mention the skills needed. I have tried to pvp in lowsec and nullsec, which usually winds up with me getting ganged up on or attacked by a cruiser or something big like that. I dont have any friends who play this, one who will soon, but until then, I dont know what to do.

Hi mate,

I think before you do anything else, you should try to find a corp to help you out.

If you want to PVP, i may suggest RVB, the corp I'm in. If you click on my profile it will take you to a page explaining a bit more about us. There is also a tread in the recruitment part of the forum with more specific stuff. Or google RVB Portal and that will take you to our website where all the information that you need is available.

Another good corp is EVE University. Just google the name and you will find their website with all the information needed to join them.

The chat windows that you have now a good way to meet people as well. Just tipe away questions and get in touch with people.

There are also dozen of other corp that you can find around that welcome new players. I had the same problem as you in the begining, couldn't really find a starting point, was not sure what to do. I did a lot of reading in blogs, forums etc till I found my place.

About professions like mining, exploration, salvaging etc... They are all situational. You will see that when you join a corp you will have the oportunity of doing a bit of everything.

Do some missions in the mean time so you can make some ISk as well, and if you want to mine, start with a frig and move to a mining cruiser in the future. Don't think you need the biggest ship from the start. Till this day i fly mostly frigs and can't even fly a Battleship!

As above post.

You don't need the retriever as a starting mining ship. Work your way up, start with frigate, then cruiser, then retriever etc. During that scaling up you can train the skills needed and also collect the ISK to buy them.

As for PvP, it comes with losses, specially early in the game. Live and learn, don't undock in ships that you used all your ISK to buy them. Take stuff you can loose (as you likely eventually will) and have a fun time with it.

But most of all, EVE is a MMO. Play it with others, it makes EVE 200% more fun and bearable to play.
There are plenty of corporations that are willing to take new players on to teach them stuff, which is something I highly suggest as you can only learn so much solo. Best to have somebody help you with your questions.

I tried the game solo as a start with a character, stopped in about 2 months. Then later made new account (forgot the name+pw of the old one) and tried again.
Joined a corp that was highly inactive and so stopped again for another 2 months. Then started playing and interacting with other people and still love this game ever since.

Even people who are good at PVP die all the time. Don't sweat it. Your ships are disposable weapon platforms designed to provide you with a few hours of entertainment before they explode in a beautiful fireball. Buy them in bulk, and run through them like cigarettes. The people you're PVPing with are not your enemies. They're playing the PVP game with you, so talk to them. Ask for advice.

And unless you love sleeping on your keyboard, avoid mining. It will seduce you in because it's easy, but it'll drive you from the game because it's REALLY easy!

I know sometimes it's difficult to realize just how much you spend on incidental things each month or year, but seriously, EVE is very cheap entertainment compared to most things... If you are a smoker, smoke one less pack a week and pay for EVE, with money left over to pick up a cheap bundle of flowers for the EVE widow upstairs.

Most of the things have been said by the posters above, but I can also recommend Sister Alitura in the Arnon system. She will set you on a long epic SoE arch, a chain of 50 missions that will take you through high-sec empire space. It's worth doing it at least once as a new player.

I enjoyed mining in my cruiser for a long time before I was ready for a mining barge. It felt like a good move since cruisers were also handy for running missions. Don't be in too big of a hurry. Enjoy what you are doing and work at it until you proficient at it before moving on to something else. I tried to rush into missions I wasn't ready for and regretted it.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy this game in a one man corporation. Sometimes MMO just means having other people to run from :)
