Miniature EVE Ship Models Idea

So I'm perusing Slashdot this morning and run across this link for a cheap(ish) 3d printer... http://cubify.com/index.aspx

And I poke around and see you can even upload your own designs to their website for others to download or to buy "prints".

And it struck me that someone less lazy than I could turn this idea into a boatload of cash, or a basement full of miniature EVE ships (or both!).

Someone, Make it so!

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

I'm not sure of the IP associated with doing that. Buying your own 3D printer and printing all the ships for yourself is probably a "better" route.

Anyway, I know I want my desk flooded with miniature spaceships!

Pretty sure that selling any models would be a copyright related no no...

Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Sometimes when I post, I look at my sig and wish that I'd follow my own god damned advice.

That was my first thought as well, but right there on that website are the likenesses, for sale, of the Space 1999 spaceship, and a certain diminutive Italian plumber with a fondness for wearing red and appearing in Nintendo games.

Even if CCP were to take the idea and run with it on a more economical scale, I have a feeling it would be a great Aurum-maker for them too, and far easier than the LEGO route.

Not empty quoting

"We will create the introduction thread if that is requested by the community. Also, we will have an ISD Seminar about the CCL team in the coming weeks in which you can ask your questions about the CCL team and provide some constructive feedback to us." - Countless pages of locked threads and numerous permabanned accounts later, change is coming.

Great idea but looks like poor execution.

No RJ-45 jack for proper networking, strike one.

90-Day warranty = Cheap rubbish that will break quickly and cost 50% the purchase price to repair, strike two.

INKjet printers clog quickly without regular use, can you imagine what will happen to a PLASTICjet printer? You're out.

CCP sells miniatures of some BS models. Yeh they are expensive but they are legit. You would need to go through some official channels or you'd be infringing on copyright. I know some people have had shapeways print some small models. Ideally to do it en masse you would want to do the models in spin cast resin as right now 3d printing is not very cost effective.

there's plenty of companies out there that will print you a single model or even parts on a onsies twosies basis, no printer purchase involved.

and making it for yourself is one thing, but selling them is a no no

But with Lego spaceships you can have epic battles, blow the ship up (nosedive it in to the floor) and then have fun rebuilding it, endlessly.
