The Hatred of "Carebears"

I just got back to EVE after quite a long hiatus and I totally forgot about the hatred of people who prefer to play in Hi-sec. How did this get started and why is there such a hatred of people who have fun playing in hi-sec areas? Is it just a rampant trend of elitism?

Edit: This got answered. I thought "carebears" was a term for people who participated in hi-sec-only playing. I was unaware that the hatred was mostly directed at people who whined about getting ganked or murdered or whatever. I didn't post this to be insulted or to start a flame war (as some people think) and I thank the people who answered!

Personally I don't mind people that stay in high-sec for ever. If you want to stay in high-sec forever, it's your choice. EVE should be played the way you want too and the way you have fun playing EVE.

I hate the people that stay in high-sec and start complaining they can be ganked. They want to turn EVE into another WoW clone by making them impossible to kill. They want a theme-park where they are shielded from every form of PvP unless they accept to do PvP. That isn't EVE.

Because they are under the impression that they are tough guys by playing a video game with spaceships. That and what J'Poll said.

As J'Poll said above, it's the people that seem to think they should be as safe as possible while in high sec that are generating the negative responses. There are plenty in high sec who realise that it's safer but not completely safe there and can appreciate the conflict that is part of the game and get the point that their activities can have some impact on other part of the game, from simply selling a bit of mission loot to manufacturing tech 2 ships and so on.

This character has spent a fair amount of time in high sec but has ventured into low and null sec more over the years, high sec can become a bit dull for some people after a while and some of the restrictions that limit you aren't in effect in low or null. Some people seem to be happy staying in high sec for whatever reasons. That's up to them, their choice, but those that don't see the bigger picture and ask to have high sec made more safe don't realise that it the activities they do there still affect others in the game and there should be potential consequences to that.

Its because so called "hardcore pvpers" actually want to gank people who cant fight back with impunity and think its unfair that they cant do that in high sec, and are instead forced to either lose a ship doing it or go fight someone in low sec who will most probably kick their arse as they are in fact bad.

"carebears" provide every ~h4rdc0re4lyfe~ wannabe (regardless of their individual quirks in playstyle) with a common antagonist of sorts. whenever they express their dislike of carebears, they reaffirm their own fragile little identities as super elite space murderers, it's p much identity through polarization "at least i'm not a carebear/miner/??"

Well that pretty much settles it. I got all the answers I was looking for, including someone from Hydra, which I always assumed was a nullsec "SCREW EVERYONE" kinda group, but I am probably misjudging them. (side note, good luck in the AT. You guys were fun to watch in AT9. Especially after those one guys tried to buy you out for 20b)

Glad to be of help. Also - thanks for your kind words and wishes regarding AT10, but we were disqualified. You can look at the AT subforum for more details if you care, I don't want to derail your thread :)

It's their own fault for messing up the finals of AT9.

And I thought it was amusing, showcasing how EVE really is a sandbox.

All I can say is Im very new, and even so I can appreciate how EVE is structured. Its not very user friendly early on and it shouldnt be. And I dont want to feel completely safe at all times. There needs to be some element of danger, and its great that it comes from REAL people. So if I lose out by being ganked or whatever, then I view that as my own fault for not being as cautious as I would be in any email scamming "give me your money" scheme.

Because honestly, at some point I want to be that guy who lures you out into deep space.....

Your problem seems to be that you haven't the slightest clue what people mean by "carebear".

And also you seem to have an issue with being a worthless internet troll posting bullshit in a newbie forum just to try to get people arguing over things, you might wanna work on that too.

Okay, the thread was going well until you posted. No one was arguing at all. I was just confused by the hatred people had for the hi-sec players. It is a completely different phenomena than I am used to. In the other MMOs I have played I have never seen people getting 'insulted' because they didn't participate in PvP. It was a legitimate question that people answered rather well. Everyone who posted seemed to get a long with each other and did so in a helpful, casual manner and you are right, I don't have a clue what people mean by "Carebear", hence why I asked in the most relevant forum (The forum for new people/returning players.)

You are the one trying to derail it and being insulting. It's not cool.

It's not a hatred of carebears, it's a hatred of whining carebears who want PvP-free zones and the like. These players need to return to their Theme Park MMOs where their safe gameplay is protected.

My Theme Parker's Guide to EVE Online series is meant to teach Theme Park players the value of EVE being different from the games that they are familiar with. My hope is that after reading the series, the ones that remain carebears will at least not become whining carebears.

Because EVE's a "sandbox", but only as long as you're playing it their way.

Null-Sec needs to HTFU and stop crying to CCP. If null-sec wants PvP, they need to stop being carebears and start fighting eachother - after years of bot-mining, they have the ships!

Whoever told you that carebears are highsec using whiners is a biased ganker most likely

If there were no carebears, there'd be no life-lacking wannabe pirates in low-sec killing people for fun. Go easy on them, they're too fragile to handle null-sec, and too economically challenged to make it in high-sec. Encourage them to seek counseling for their mental health problems.

I don't hate carebears because it's too much effort. I'm just not overly-excited about their existence until they're on the receiving end of my Tornado.
