Difference between High sec, low sec and null sec exploration

Hello,

I am currently flying a Tengu and took it upon myself to go for an adventure of sorts. I was bored of running level 4 missions again and again like a drone in the safety and warmth of high sec space. It was plain boring after a while. I have little experience with null sec, but so far I've found it relatively safe. The most dangerous part is passing through the high sec// null sec border systems, but even then it's mild. Tengus are awesome like that. Bubbles? I say pop.

Anyways, since I've been down here I've mainly been ratting around belts and doing the anomalies I can find with my ship's onboard scanner. I did however bring a locust analyzer subsystem, with some probe launchers. I've tried some scanning in high sec in the past, and after several hours I made, maybe 5 million isk.. if that.

I'm just curious if it's worth the risk and effort of scanning down a lot of sites out in null sec. Are the rewards guaranteed to be better or is it simply that the odds increase?

also, I have Archaeology, salvaging and hacking to level IV. As well, astrometric rangefinding is at level 3. With the emergent locust analyzer subsystem and electronic subsystem at level V I get a %50 bonus to probe scan strength there. Finally, I am using the sister expanded probe launcher, with sister probes.

so the final question is, with these skills and equipment, is there any site I would be unable to do?

Yes, null plexes are definitely worth it, so are radar sites, even mag sites are valuable in null. Tengu is one of the best ships for the task, so you should be fine, but only you can find the answer by trying them out- which is also the most fun part of the whole exploration thing.

Probe them out, dive in and see for yourself, only thing that is certain that the rewards are very lucrative indeed Cool

Nullsec's good loot is worth more, but there's still crappy loot, and there's still empty cans.

You'll be able to hack/salvage/analyze any can/wreck in nullsec with them all to 4 (eventually, you might take a while for some of the harder cans), and your probes should be able to scan down any site.

Awesome folks, thanks a lot.

If my skills are already sufficient to access and run any mag or radar site, is there any point in getting archaeology and hacking to level 5? Is the difference only in faster access times or does it also increase the odds of getting a better reward?

Nope, the reward is not influenced.
Higher skill = less time needed Smile

This. But consider what that means. Less time to open a can means less time in a site decloaked, which means lower risk. It's not just in clearing more sites per hour.

On the harder cans with a -10% access bonus, going from 20% base open to 35% base open means going from 1 open in 10 tries to 1 open in 4 tries. And that's significant.

the odds for good loot remains the same for all security levels: random
it's simply that low-sec/null-sec is less populated in comparison to high-sec and therefore not as much competition
plus, outside of high-sec, you can shoot and kill other explorers! woo! Lol

I found a Serpentis Fleet Shipyard, which evidently is a 10/10 DED site. I could only get it up to 86% at the maximum, so I guess there are still sites I can't pin down yet, although I am close.

Do you think another 10% bonus to probe strength would be enough to pin it down, and is that site the hardest one there is to scan?

So far this is going great besides that. Out of 4 mag sites I've made close to 170 mil from power Circuits.

radars are quite crappy. magsites on average is 100mil with occasional t2 rig with material and prod efficiency at 0 as i remember. combat sited are most profitable, but it depends which. i just don''t bother with *faction military complex* because they take too long, drop silly loot and raryly escalate.

t2 scanning frigate with scanning skills at 3/4, sister launcher+probes i can pinpoint 10/10, you shouldn't have a problem. if you're in a scanning tengu, make sure that your scanning subsystem level is at 5.

It's at level 5 yes with astrometric rangefinding at level 3 currently.. I don't know. I had six probes out, with all of them correctly converging on the point, at 0.25 scan range. 86% target strength. Weird. Oh well, it really does not matter, I was not about to solo a 10/10 complex anyways.

I've heard that it's possible to get BPCs of rare ships like the Machariel, are they in mag or radar sites?

You can do Seprpentis complex in 2-3 minutes. I don't know about other ones though.

Pirate ship BPCs are dropped by Faction Rats ( extremely rarely ) and by Overseer rats/structures ( in rated complexes and final stage of expeditions ). In null sec you can get pirate battleships BPCs ( Vindicator, Mach, Nightmare ... ).

Fleet Shipyard and Staging Point are the hardest signatures you can find. Try using 7 probes for starters. Getting rangefinding on level 4 is a must really. Get Pinpointing to level 4 also ( it really helps ).

Radar sites drop Invention stuff + new mods BPCs + some skill books.
Mag sites drop salvage ( both T1 and T2 ) + T2 rig BPCs + new mods BPCs + some skill books.

No need to give up on such sites. You might still be able to get it to 100%.

Try more probes and repositioning.
The nearer you get your probe cluster to the site, the stronger the signal, the more accurate the position.
The more probes the less the possibility that you accidentally move to far away from the site.

I was led to believe that, although extremely rare, it was possible to get a billion isk + payout item from a mag or radar site. Is this true? Is there any item obtainable within those sites that have a value that high?

No.
The most valuable items you can get here are :
High-end T2 salvage like Capacitor consoles, Intact Armor Plates, Power Circuits etc.
High-end decryptors
New X-Large Shield Boosters BPCs

From my experience ( after doing about 70 nullsec profession sites ) :
Payout from radars : 1-80 mil
Payout from mags : 5-500 mil ( depends on region - Bloods > Sansha = Angel = Guristas > Serpentis )


I remember reading that there are some special combat ladar sites ( hacking ) that can spawn named faction commanders and they can drop other stuff as well ( including implants and ship BPCs ). I never found them myself however.

These are the *faction* Distribution Base and *faction* Production Facility, and they are only found in the certain ladar regions

The serp 10/10 is the easiest 10/10.

Can literally be solo'd in a T2 afterburner tengu and you can get 1.5+ billion. In about a half hour.

Its pretty sweet.

What I've read online suggests that there is a final stronghold structure that repairs its armor extremely fast, and this is assuming I can even survive up until that point. I have decent skills (17 mil sp mostly in missiles, spaceship command and engineering) but my modules are mostly T2, besides three caldaryi navy BCUs. I doubt I could pull it off. I don't use any alts so I am 100% solo on this, no fleet boosts or anything. Overloaded with HAMs and +5% missile implants I can hit 1k dps, but I heard this was insufficient. Shame, because I really would like to try it, I'm just not there yet.

Unless there is a strategy I haven't heard of?

You need to be at least 60km from it and then it stops repping like crazy.
In Serpentis Prison Camp ( DED8 ) there is similar station and it will stop repping when switching targets so you need two ships for that ( maybe drones could work ).

Arrow Warp 2 ships in
Arrow Check which ships has been targeted by the station
Arrow Warp this ship out
Arrow Station changes target to your second ship and stops repping
Arrow Get your first ship back to the site
Arrow If the station switches targets again it will start repping so you will need to repeat this procedure

Yeah I heard about that strategy. Since I am in a Tengu that does not use drones, there is no way to do this alone, is there? Maybe I'll get an alt eventually but that's a ways away. Figures too, I found a prison camp today near where I found the fleet shipyard. These sites are not particularly rare.. or I was just unlucky to be lucky. P
