Wealth lets you buy things - that's it. You can do things like play the market with your capital to take money and make it into more money, or you can bankroll a corporation, but for the most part it's just for buying ships, modules, starbases, etc. There are tons of ways to generate wealth and there are also tons of ways to play the game that don't necessarily even require a lot of wealth.

Combat is important, yes - even if you don't personally get involved in PVP, it's PVP that drives loss which is what keeps the economy going.


Personally, I'm involved in faction warfare (a player war between the major factions, Amarr vs Minmatar in my case). The lowsec inbetween the two factions can be captured for each respective side, and doing so earns rewards in the form of 'loyalty points' which can be exchanged for certain equipment, which I then use to further fund my combat. My day to day gameplay, aside from administering the corp I am a part of, involves mostly fighting other players.

Meta gaming in here goes to whatever you can remember, if it's in game mechanics it's allowed there have be alliances that even their name was stolen

To be more specific, there is no ingame support for something like this, but CCP allows players to sell EVE related services for ISK.

(This only applies to EVE related services. You can't offer to sell anything else for ISK out of game.)

The game is about what you make it... You enjoy combat - group and solo. Are you talking about vs other players or against NPCs? If you want to shoot at other players (but not piracy) then try factional warfare and fight for your empire.

Wealth lets you buy stuff. Skills, ships, insurance, clones. Basically isk is what lets you buy improvements (skills) and the equipment to use the skills you have. If you stick to cheap frigates you can easily ignore a lot of wealth issues. If you want to get into advanced/specialised frigates and cruisers then you need a lot more isk to pay for the losses.

Just remember - everything except the skills in your head are meant to be disposable. Dont undock in a ship unless you feel you can replace it easily. - "Dont fly what you cant afford to lose".

I would like to add to the advise these good people have provided. As you noted there indeed is a ton of things to do in EVE. Also refer to thise excellent graph What to do in EVE.

Beware that the game in no way limits what you can do, so if you want its perfectly fine to do both mining and pvp. You dont pick a carreer and be stuck with it. At the same time I would like to caution you not to try to many things. Skill training works such that if you specialize heavily you can be competitive with veteran players in a relative short period of time. I guess this is especially important if you want to get into PVP quickly. Being involved with a null sec alliance I often see players with a fairly decent amount of skillpoints (say 10M) discover that most of their current SP are not very useful in their newly chosen PVP career (ie. all galente pilots :)). If you want some guidance into skilling up with pvp in mind you are welcome to contact me.

In the end this is a complex game, and, altho there is a ton of material available online, I would highly recommend to get into touch with felow pilots, join a corp and dont be affraid to ask for advise. (EVE university, Red Federation vs Blue Republic for more pvp oriented introduction) Obviously like in any online platform there are a ton of jerks around, but at the same time you will find plenty of players who are willing to help out.

Well.. i want to clear something up real quick. You can be HIGHLY reputable and live in places where PVP happens on an every second basis. Killing other players doesn't make you a "blood thirsty pirate"... in most sectors of space it means you are defending your territory.

For instance.... most NPC 0.0 players are in corporations which have "claimed" an area as their own. They defend this area from anyone who comes in and isn't a part of their corporation. Typically, the reason they do this is so that the miners and PVE'ers of their corp can earn money and minerals in peace.

Now, having said that, there is down right piracy... but don't mistake PVP combat and piracy... they are very different things.

Just read the linked PDF. It lists a lot of "meta careers" which aren't really part of game but could still be thought as EVE careers.
