Killing Cruisers with Frigs? (PvP)

I'm interested in doing some solo PvP, and I was wondering if it's possible to kill Cruisers with T1 frigs? If yes, what kind of fit/strat am I looking for. If not, what would be the ideal ship/fit to fly for solo PvP?

Sure it's possible. You want to get a fast frigate, T2 weapons, and pick your targets well. Avoid taking on drone ships if possible. Also watch out for Neuts.

Hell, there's a video running around youtube of a guy killing an Oracle (Battlecruiser) with a Velator (Rookie Ship).

Is it possible to use meta 4-5 weapons instead of T2? Since the requirements and cost between the two is quite astronomical. Also, is there a certain DPS range I'm looking for?

Yes, there's a difference. You want T2 so you can overheat your guns - which you may need to do to break the cruiser's tank quickly. If isk is an issue, just target cruisers with the weakest tanks and weapon systems with holes. You can actually out-range/kite some cruiser (like anything with blasters) in a well skilled/modded rail or arty frigate.

DPS is less important than your tank/speed. It won't matter what you do, if you get hit much in your T1 frigate, you're dead. Fit a super-fast frig with a respectable buffer tank. Pulse your MWD as frequently as you can, or try to get a fit where you can perma-run an AB (and pray that the target doesn't have a web).

Would getting extremely close for like 700m orbit be viable?

Its very possible to kill cruisers, battle cruisers and even battleships in T1 frigates. Almost all larger targets will be fitting MWDs so you will want a scram to hold them in place. A nos is very useful to keep your tackle running.

You will want to avoid ships that have bonused drones, multiple nuets or multiple webs. Things like vexors, arbitrators, hurricanes, ruptures can be fairly nasty.

The outcome of these types of engagements are usually determined in the first few moments. You will either get quickly volleyed on your approach or you will survive and get under their guns. If you do manage to get under their guns its just a matter of time before you slowly chew through them. Keep an eye out for their back up though.

As for t2 weapons. They may cost a bit more but are well worth it. Not just for the increased damage but also for access to t2 ammo choices.

I would try to do a set orbit at 500. Its possible to manually pilot a tighter orbit but takes some skill to achieve.

Yes...more than viable. Especially if you're going up against a cruiser with weapon systems that have shyte tracking. Arty or beam laser cruisers would be easy pickings up close and personal.

I've done precisely that in this Merlin:

3x Light Neutron Blaster II

MWD
SSE II
TD II
Warp Scrambler II

Tracking Enhancer II
Magnetic Stabilizer II
Overdrive Injector

Nice close-up punch, a little tank and a lot of speed. Between the velocity and the TD, any cruiser would have a rough time hitting you for much. A similar set-up can work on other frigates as well as long as they have the right number of slots in the right place.

Thanks for all the responses, I was scanning down an Onyx and some hauler for about 30 mins. After I finally pin-pointed their location and was ready to **** **** up, I realized that they're both docked at a POS. Lesson learned: Scan for force fields.

Scanning with probes or D-Scan?

A lot of times, if you scan them close to a planet/moon, they're in a POS. It's the ones that appear to be hanging out in the middle of space that are your juicier targets as they're probably mission fit or running a grav/mag/radar site.

D-Scan. Is it possible to scan down the mission runners with D-Scan or should I just carry around a probe launcher and dock to change fittings after I've found em?

Define "carry around a probe launcher". You can't scan down ships with a core probe launcher, you need the expanded launcher to use combat probes, and it requires 220 CPU. You can't actually fit one on any T1 frigate other than a scanning frigate.

It's not generally possible to use Dscan to get a warpin for someone running a mission. Technically it can be, depending on whether you can triangulate their position between existing bookmarks and celestials, but your likelihood of doing that successfully is almost nil.

I see your point, however if I get close enough with the D-Scanner, can I use the my ship's scanner to get a warp in on 'em?

Cruor can do it nicely, as long as it nuets before being nueted (and doesn't face specific anti frig setups).

As with all frigs facing larger ships, watch out for drones and if possible kill them quickly.

No. All your ship's scanner will give you is either what is in a certain direction within a certain distance (dscan) or what anomaly sites there are around you (on-board scanner). If the targets are in the anomaly site, you could get them, but if they're in a legit mission or in an exploration complex, the only way to get a warp-in on them is via using probes.

t2 to heat your guns? Not sure what you're talking about with that. You can overheat any guns, and meta guns take heat better then t2.

Check your target BEFORE you decide to do your 500 orbit. Would be painful to race in and find out you just fed a blaster boat a free meal. ;)

And as stated above, avoid drone boats. If they are pvp loaded, you will not have fun most of the time.

If you are able to, I personally prefer AB over MWD (sig bloom is painful). But I am still learning myself.

Best of luck

What with all the warnings about avoiding drones, and while it might just be a case of "obvious advice is obvious," it would likely pay to be careful around anyone you see in a Caracal varient as well. Even a newish player in a PvE fit could get lucky and have brought a web along, and outside of chewing up low-level frigate-heavy missions the hull is generally used... to chew up frigates. So, you'd want to check their fit pretty carefully w/ a T1 frigate.
