The purpose of this post is to present my idea for an EVE Machinima. I'm a huge fan of Clear Skies, Day of Darkness, and Rooks and Kings, and I feel like I could make my mark among them. Right now, I'm looking for tools and people interested in helping me with this goal.

What does this mean for you, forum-goer? It means that I would deeply like your help. Skills, knowledge, opinions, and experience related to EVE Online in general, Machinima making in general, or whatever else it is you feel you want to contribute. Even the inspirational quote, words of advice, or cheering from the sidelines has powerful positive impacts on a project like this.

In the following posts, I will be recording my journey to production, as detailed below.

  1. Brainstorming: Create some "elevator pitches"; Short paragraphs explaining the direction and creative force on the film.

  2. Idea Development: Developing a script, and having the script edited. This is easily the hardest part for me, seeing as my creative writing tends to be dry, and assumes you have knowledge you have no way of knowing. Further, I detest people changing my wording in writing, further increasing my dificulty..

  3. Assemble a Team: Voice actors, 3d Modelers, Animators, Musicians, and more. One egger cant do it alone.

  4. Production: Voice actor's dialog recorded, Sets designed, Characters animated, then music/video editing.

1. Brainstorming:

This is where I plan to record my "idea pitches" for the script.

"Shadows of the Past"
A young Seibestor wanna-be capsuleer embarks on a journey of discovering his legacy, collecting an energetic crew including the beautiful True Amarrian archeologist, the brilliant Matari scientist who just wants to be famous, and a suave Gallente business man with a dark secret. When our young hero finds out the truth of his parents, it brings him into conflict a calm and cruel Amarrian Slaver. Will our hero get the girl and find out the truth of his family past? Imagine a cross between "Bourne Legacy" and "Star Wars". set in the EVE Online universe.

"Pilgrimage"
The old, dying Amarrian slave owner asks his reluctant Grandson to take a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to the EVE Gate. Along the way they meet a successful ex-slave with a drug problem, and the Grandson's estranged and distant father, but are ambushed by brutal Sansha pirates. Will the Father and the Son's relationship be improved in time? Will the Grandson learn the dark history behind the Grandfather? Think "Citizen Kane" meets "Road to Perdition" set in the EVE Online universe.

"Exploits"
A down-on-his-luck Caldari thief hatches a desperate but bold plan to make a lot of ISK. He builds a team including the independent Hacker chick, his long time friend and partner in crime, and a shady businessman looking to hurt a rival. Their plans are brought to a halt when the long-time friend quits the group after a heated argument with the Caldari thief, and tells the target that they're gonna get robbed. Desperately, the heist goes forward. Will it work with a man down and an aware target? Will they get away richly and safely? Think "Oceans 11" meets "The Italian Job" set in the EVE Online universe

"Dark Space"
A pair of naive wanna-be explorers collect a team to explore the depths of (W-space or Jovian Space). The bloodthirsty female captain makes a bad call, and the ship is lost in space. Will the wise archeologist and the clever but secretive tourist be able to find a solution before it's too late? Will the captain earn forgiveness, or continue down a dark path? Imagine "Lost in Space" meets "Prometheus" set in the EVE Online universe.

"Nomad"
A Thukker Fleet commander tells his story while trying to find a replacement to command the Nomadic fleet. The would-be commanders have to overcome their own fears and flaws, in addition to proving that they are better than the competition. When all the plans and schemes come to a point, an unexpected hostile encounter with the Angel Cartel puts everything on its head. Our plucky protagonists personally overcome the odds and stop the enemy fleet, earning their position as the commander of the fleet. Think "Battlestar Galactica" meets "Harry Potter" set in the EVE Online universe.

Sounds really awesome.

I especially like the "Dark Space" idea. Mainly cause I'm a sucker for those sorts of stories :P

Unfortunately I don't really have any practical skills in this area to offer. But my advice (as someone who has never made a machinima) is that these sorts of creative projects are always very hard, very time consuming and easy to start but hard to finish. So I would suggest, once you have a team together, doing a short, humble project first. This way you can see how you all work as a team, what skills are noticeably lacking from your team, everyone gets a taste of the machinima production process, and you get valuable feedback you can use to improve when you begin your major project. It's best to discover all these things on a small project first rather than several months into development on a major work.

Best of luck sir, I sincerely hope you succeed o7

I like Dark Space and Exploit the best. I can do some brainstorming and give ideas for the dialogue. If this project will begin recording and actually gets into motion, I could audition for voice acting. :D

So wait, I don't get it. What do you bring to the table for this project? It sounds to me like you're the "ideas guy" and you're just looking for a bunch of people to handle all the easy stuff, like "all the work". What tangible skills or experience will you bring to your team and to your project?

May I suggest completing a script outline first, following standard outline templates, and submit it to CCP.

If they are willing to assist you, then write the script.

The script is the blueprint for the film, without it, there is no film.

What you have written is pretty cliché and highly predictable schlock - which is not necessarily a bad thing, just would require immense levels of ingenuity in the writing, and exceptional delivery from the actors and actresses.

If the script is good, and you got people willing to visit your house whilst you record their lines of dialogue, plus any and all technical assistance from CCP - then you got something to work with.

If not, you got a logistical nightmare with no commitments other than a some people you've never met potentially willing to create virtual scenes in 3D programs, and then render/animate them for you.

Outline first, then script, then storyboard, then pre-production, then production. I cannot stress this point enough: you cannot do this in reverse.

One more thing; if you detest someone else editing your writing, this is problematic right off the bat - you must learn the lesson of discarding your writing, because similar to editing a film, editing the writing means keeping 10% of what you write. All those scripts out there you read that are roughly 100 pages, are probably over 1,000 pages edited down and polished.

Nothing is correct first time, otherwise is would contradict the creative process.

Just wanted to add something here; Valve have finally released the Source Film Making tool to the general public. All one would need to do is convert eve models to conform to the source mod toolset and you're good to go, with probably one of the most professional tools on the web to date.

Clear skies 4, anyone?
