Returning player. I've been asking lots of questions on the forums. But one of the biggest I have is can anyone give me a quick and dirty run down of the major players (like groups, not individual players) in the eve scene right now and what the general public is up to?

In my past eve plays I've always been a complete carebear living in my own little world. I would do my missions and keep to myself. A few times I took wanders through null sec for thrills and lost a few ships there, as well as 2 days in FW.

I know this is a very broad question but I'm basically clueless as to what's going on outside my bubble with the landscape of eve.

I can fly t2 fit battlecruisers for amarr and gallente as well as a retriever. Are there groups who run big mining operations? any good wars that I might partake in.

Go to general discussions forum for the latest spam.

Go to recruitment forum to find a corp is the best I can offer.

Hopefully this is not a stealth Goons are bad thread.

maybe try looking in here and here

You'll have to weed through a lot of troll posts and people bad mouthing each other's alliances but it's the best way to figure out the most current stuff regarding the big null sec power blocs I could imagine.

Also try digging a bit through news items that both are published by the ISD news crew or from other EVE news sites. Those are pretty good for picking up the big major events recently.

Just read up with stuff.

Thanks all.

I've tried reading the general discussion but it can be summed up as

"miners are ruining eve"
"non miners are ruining eve"
"goons suck"
"goons are awesome and everyone else sucks"
"THE WORLD IS ENDING!!!!!!!!"

I seriously couldn't learn anything from it other than people hate goons which I've learned is basically the largest alliance, and goons hate everyone else. Other than that the general discussion seems to be a bit of a cesspool of exaggerated idiocy.

You are gonna love CAOD then. /sarcasm

There are other EVE sites, like EVEnews24 Failheap and Kugu. I can't stand reading much of the last two, and EVEnews24 bounces all over the map on quality / accuracy. I read the EVEnews24 RSS feed though. Reddit's /r/Eve is decent as a general forum goes, and /r/eveporn is often interesting (in-game pictures).

I also read the CCP devBlog and News RSS feeds (I use Google Reader so I can read them on my Android phone or web browser).

I think the Goons actually do love everyone, in the violent way that goes unappreciated. Kinda like the family uncle who only shows up for Christmas, gets way too plastered on White Russians and then burns down your house while trying to show you a cool trick he learned in 'Nam.

That analogy is curiously specific...

the little research i've been doing seems to fit that. To me it sounds like they're just trying to keep things interesting and immersive.... unfortunately it also sounds like they attract players who just want to be jerks for the sake of being jerks. But after some reading I can respect what they're doing.

The idea is that everyone loves the goons, few people want to be near the goons though. Because your belongings perish in fire.

Goons are the clan for members of the Something Awful forum. If you don't belong to the forum, then "recruiting" you is a scam to steal your ****, not an actual offer to let you join.

Also, if you're not familiar with SA, it's about one step up the "good people" ladder from /b/ on 4chan, which is to say it's essentially the ******* of the internet. So there's that, for what it's worth.

Generally speaking, I'd stay away from them unless your mental state is also permanently nailed down to that of a spiteful thirteen-year-old in the mid 1990s. I wouldn't say anyone hates them, but the majority of Eve players are some form of adult or other and hanging out in the middle-school version of the clique from "Mean Girls" doesn't appeal to us, really.
