Booby Trap!

Is there any viability or use in having some kind of booby trap module/item?

I am thinking that such an item could be dropped in to jet-cans, and maybe wrecks, to detonate upon the can/wreck next being opened/examined. The resulting AoE damage could be a nasty surprise for ninja looters, miner/salvager ambushers, and can-flippers, and provide an interesting new level of defence.

I am thinking this could be interesting.

And why not? By can flipping, the player is accepting that they are granting permission to be attacked by the can's rightful owner... why can't the attack be delivered without delay?

Promotes more explosions, very directly indeed!

this. i was busy playing a different MMO when mines were still in the game, so they should totally be reintroduced :D

I doubt that it would be AoE - that doesn't mix well with high-sec.

Also, at least some containers only let you remove items, not put them into them. I don't remember whether wrecks do or not, but that might limit the options for this module further.

It's definitely an interesting idea, though.

Completely agree that this would be a very fun mechanic to see implemented. Various "surprises" ranging from direct AoE damage to the unauthorized "opener" to something like EW effects or interdiction spheres.

Let there be risk to isk

I support all of these things. Can flip in highsec in a tanky BS and watch CONCORD gank the miners for you!

I am expecting this will take advantage of the can flipping mechanic, so that is avoided.

(IE: the item in the can looks good, and by taking this item grants right to attack to the player who put the mine in the can. In other words, BAIT)
Can detonates, or item detonates, whatever. Concord couldn't care less.

Side effect: They attacked you by rigging the can, you can shoot them now.

Twist: If the person who did this is not the same person you see nearby, shooting them gets you Concorded.
(Different person in same corp, so can had misleading tag on it)

If it's AOE, I park my neutral alt next to the can in a reaper when I flip it.

AOE? You are right on that detail, but I doubt they would use that mechanic unless they managed to transfer associated responsibility.

(Damage to flipper flagged as original with permission due to flipping, collateral damage blamed on flipper since it was their action detonating it)
They could do that, since responsibility with these rules is pretty arbitrary. Concord won't show up for a flipper, and their entire corp can shoot you? vOv

I suppose.

Still, flip can -> tank bomb -> blow up now agressed miner will be fine too. Most of them won't have escorts.

This sounds fair to me: an expendable item that you charge and place into a container. Nothing can be removed from the container without detonating the charge and damaging the one trying to remove items. It could do damage based on target size, and of a specific damage type.

The person who opens the can would see the device and if they know what it is, may choose not to take anything. They won't know if it's actually armed, how powerful the charge is, or what damage type it is.

So you stick one in your jet can next to your skiff. You've got 3 explosive shield hardeners on, and it does explosive damage. A LOT of explosive damage.

A spider only needs you to know that she can bite, to make you stay away from her.
