Solo Mining: Orca vs Hulk

Up time is the average time spent "on the rocks"

7.83 m3/sec (Orca)
100% up time

25.78 m3/sec (Hulk)
20% up time adjusted to: 5.15 m3/sec

So for a inattentive player, like myself the Orca actually produces more ore due to lack of hauling requirements and infinite cycle duration.

I mostly plan on doing solo Grav sites in high-sec while playing on my combat character.

Any input?

I'm not sure I follow. How are you going to mine with an Orca other than drones?

You said it, Drones. The yield is crap but if you're doing it in high sec and the alternative would be not doing anything you'll make isk.
Just fit your orca with 2 invuls, 1 em and a med shield booster, use 1 drone on each roid and go afk.
Its probably like 2 mil per hours but if your PCs runs a lot its better than nothing I guess.

Unless there is something to substantiate that 20% hulk uptime and the infinite roids your drones get, you are basically asking if:

- 7.83 m3/sec is better than 0 m3/sec
- 7.83 m3/sec is better than 5.15 m3/sec

You are trying to facilitate a zero attention activity. What you achieve instead is you give up the potential of a hulk + 5 drones for 5 drones. You could quite comfortably run 4+ hulks while doing your missions. Switching to the miner client every 10 minutes is not any more demanding than switching every 30 minutes, and you get several times more ISK.

How would you kill rats? Plus you have to switch targets.

Im not sure what an orca gives you. You'd be better off mining in an industrial.

Tedium and difficulty are not the same thing, if you don't realize this then STFU about game design.

huh some how this all sounds retarted.

heaving a orca and a hulk i hard yields around 1500m3 a minute so like 30 minutes and i had a weeks worth of your way.

its been a little while since i went mining but im sure it was higher numbers then that.

It is a ball park number, roids are inconsiderate enough not to conform to your cycles and cargo capacity. If you want to minimize attention like OP you will obviously fit for cargo, else a max yield fit can hold what, 1 cycle?

If you are inattentive, consider ice mining in a Mack. No need to switch targets and reactivate lazers.
Full cargo in 19 mins unattended.
I tried it for a while and made around 15 - 30 mil per day.

I like this idea, one of the most challenging things as a solo miner is having to monitor the cycles anyway so you can wait to do mini-courier missions back to the station. Not only would it save on inevitable downtime but it would make solo mining a lot more tolerable in my opinion.

I currently get 81m3 per drone on my Orca and I park it in a .9 sec system for no rats. It's absolutely fabulous for work where I can afk mine for hours or when watching TV. I just reset them to new roids every time I get a chance. I generally fill the entire Orca 4-7 times a week. (121500m3)

You'll want the following
5 T2 mining drones
2- T2 Mining drone augmentor rigs
1 T1 Mining drone augmentor rig
Drone interfacing 4
A good tank

Drone Interfacing 5 and you can pull 90m3 per drone

For lows, some people say cargohold expanders. I go with either of these depending on the situation:
A) 2 Inertia stabilizers- just to be more agile
B)Reinforced Bulkhead II + Damage Control II For when I need the extra EHP for gankers

Cargohold expanders don't make sense because I'm never out in a field that long and It takes long enough to fill up an Orca as it is. In a .9 system the only thing you're going to see is bots anyway. The obvious bot I reported is still chugging away, warps to 0 on belt, goes to pyroxeres, mines it, then warps to station.

It was one of the things I was scared of, but Orca's are tough but not impossible nuts to crack. Another thing working in my favor is my play time. It's fit with a 250,000EHP tank, so you will probably need friends.

Now if you or CCP can just take care of those bots that plague and my roids. Blink

Unless you bringt 25 Friends, you're not going to do **** against a DC'ed Orca with a Bulkhead.

op you fail to remember that mining drones have an annoying habit of 1. getting primaried by npc rats& 2. not repeatedly mining roids even when told to repeatedly mine.

this means afk or tabbing out to pvp toon means your up time will NOT be always at 100%

Everytime you buy something that says "made in china" you are helping the rising unemployment in your own country unless you are from china, Buy locally produced goods and help create more jobs.

The only problem with your assumption being that npc rats don't spawn in 1.0 and 0.9 security systems. I happily afk mine millions of m3 per month thanks to this mechanic. I'll probably take a break to let the heat cool down from gank squads.

I don't need someone to come with his closest 30+ friends to test my tank. Blink

Hmm ... interesting read. I would need something to with my EVE client while I play a match of Heroes of Newerth. The matches are from 30-60 min long and in the heat of battle I totally forget to Alt Tab. Would this Orca mine for 60 min without me being there ?

I don't care about profit so much. I just fell better knowing that my client is doing something useful.

Yes, especially if you hit veldspar. Just stick a drone on each roid and play your other game, like WoT, You can also use 2+ monitors. I use one for WoT for one and the other for mining/surfing the internet. I hope I can get a 3rd monitor next year.

You can put some combat links on your orca and boost your combat pilot, while it mines those roids with drones. Might not get a grav site with that, but not too much waste then though.
