I'll start off by saying I do not have a great computer. It has been running the base game of Eve great, but the when I want to design a character, it's very laggy. The reason I'm asking is because I want to make my character look less generic (he looks like a mass produced version of a Caldari soldier), but the character looks bad on the creator. When I am finished and have clicked "Finalize", will the character portrait reflect the best possible settings or, the ones that I have to use to get through it? Thank you for any help!

Hopefully the best. Go find a pal who has a nice rig, load Eve and do it there!

All portraits are rendered in the highest quality regardless of your personal preferences.

I have a very beefy computer with a fast processor, good chunk of RAM, and a very expensive video card and the characteer designer is very laggy on my machine too.

so its not you :)

All portraits will be re-rendered on CCP's server within few days from creation. So initially it can look bad if you didn't have good computer but it doesn't take long to get re-rendered at max quality.

Make sure to be in full screen, not windowed. Also go into settings and disable simulated cloth and hair.

I tend to switch up portraits very often. The image that immediately appears in game looks rough, while the image here is usually the old one for a few hours. Soon though the image on this site is updated, while the image in game is still the rough render. If you "clear cache" it will revert to the old nicely rendered image if it hasn't uploaded the new nicely rendered image. Sometimes it will not show the newer rerendered image for a very long time, so clearing the cache can speed it up, and at the very least you can look at your older rerendered image until then instead of the rough draft that you made on your system.
