I would not like to see my old avatars ingame again. That was one aspect of EvE I cringed at, they were like comic book caricatures, and everyone knows, Internet Spaceships is a Serious Business. I was thankful every time I logged on that I didn't have to stare at the avatar while playing.

That said, I did capture for posterity every old portrait I created.

looking at your avatar I can't help but laugh at the irony of your post

yes, the art department as apparently lost its collective imagination and now fall back on their technical skills.

I like the new art direction. I like the new Scorpion a lot but I can't find a reason to fly one. Names come from our time to evoke some familiarity for us because if we lived 23,000 in the future the ship names would make sense to us. It is also completely possible that the original settlers of New Eden brought a large number of creatures with them, possibly even scorpions, in order to terraform the new worlds.

The Gallente could use with more outlandish choices considering their culture but I think the other races are on the mark as far as styling goes. It may be the far future but the people have been beaten down so many times that most choices are made for practical reasons and I think that is reflected in the current art direction.

But in the current snapshot of New Eden, the civilizations are on the rise, ambitious, and they've been around that way for a while - they should be flamboyant in their own ways. Maybe Minmatar, yes, they should be as you say, and the current "biker" look is what Minnies should be like generally. But the other races (again, both ships and people) ought to have a more expansive feel.

Gallente are trying to spread their liberalism, Amarr their theocracy, Caldari want to control, even Minmatar want to carve out their own space. All these are civilizations on the rise.

That all sounds great and I'm all for a wider range of style and design. I doubt we'll be seeing much of that in the ships and if CCP spends much time on Incarna then they risk yet another uprising even though EVE the spaceship game seems to be much improved.

First off - I believe i know this other thread you speak of, but i won't make assumptions Blink (Correct me if im wrong)
I, personally, disagree. (I +1'd your post because its well written and that doesnt happen often enough on these forums - particularly your final paragraph)
I disagree because the newer, 'less goofy' direction felt more 'eve like'.
The universe is portratyed as harsh and unforgiving, not goofy. The ships are utilitarian because 'Hey! If we dont include beds for the crew, we can make one more Ship for every 1000! Awesome!'.
About the 'Caldarification' of ships (Is that such a bad thing? Sorry, once you go Blocky and Grey...) I dont believe this is entirely True. Neither the new Nemesis or the Talos are very utilitarian (They are both far too smooth and well rounded...)
Visually, less 'goofy' leads to more believability, and that in turn leads to more immersion.

About your last paragraph (Making things look like they have a function) I fully agree with you. Each ship needs aspects that have clearly defined roles, and aspects that players scratch their heads over. Mixed in varying proportions and with unclear boundaries.

EVE isnt Easy, EVE isnt Nice, and EVE Isnt goofy. EVE Is Harsh, and EVE Is Cuthroat., and this should be reflected in ship design. They are built to do nothing other than Destroy, Kill, Murder, Pillage, then Destroy some More, with some **** thrown in for good measure (Exception Being the Industrial Ships)

I respectfully Disagree, but have a bump for good measure.

no, just the old costumes. I'm surprised they still think it's ok to not have the minmatar gas mask, gallante plastic bits back :/

Heh, thanks.

But people seldom destroy and kill for money alone. Such people are called "pirates", and certainly they exist, but there are also 4 whole civilizations in EVE that have their own culture, lore, life, symbolisms, etc., etc. And - they are rich, they don't have to scrimp and save to make stuff to kill.

Amarr can afford gold and pointless ornamentation on their spaceships.

Gallente can afford flamboyant sexualized designs on their spaceships.

Caldari are utilitarian because their culture is corporate/fascist (Zaibatsu) - i.e. it's an ideologically driven reason.

Again, as with the other respondent above, yes, the Minmatar could be said to answer to the philosophy you're outlining. But again, they are also proud, proud of the fact that they've broken Amarr chains and are carving out their own space.

So for all the spaceships to be Caldarified, and the avatars to be Minmatarified, just doesn't suit the lore.

This is not, and never was meant to be a simple arena PvP game, it is and was always meant to be a multiplayer Elite, with a whole, complex cultural background to the Universe, which ought to be reflected in 4 unique design philospohies and looks.

If not, then let's just chuck the whole thing in the bin ffs, forget all the virtual world building crap, let's just have a pew-pew arena with a chat lobby, with spaceships that just look totally like unimaginative, unevocative symmetrical generic movie science fiction spaceships. Who cares?

But so long as there is a virtual world in New Eden, so long as there is a lore, then I'd say it's objectively the case that the art design is falling short of what it should be to represent that - it's on track to becoming bland, homogenized, and dull.

Beautifully implemented bland, homogenized and dull.

I did read in the Art Dept blog that they do want to add a lot more 'rotaty things' to ships.

Yay.

I like rotaty-things.

The original Scorpion looked great. But non-Caldari complained, not understanding its weird functional beauty. Eventually their whining got foothold at the art department and now we have the ship actually look like a sodding symmetric scorpion, instead of just sharing some defining features.

With its asymmetry and tail it looked weird but VERY Caldari. Now it just looks ridiculous. Same with the Ibis both look more like something that belongs in from some high-budget SF anime.

edit: The old Scorp, together with the Raven and the Blackbird are the reason why I chose Caldari (I played the beta as Amarr and Gallente). I HATE the new art direction.

I hate the new scorpion.

I loved and would even pay aurum ( shudder ) just to get one of the old ones back to fly...

I hate the old scorpion.

It was a horrid abomination of a battleship. While the new one strays too close to it's namesake, I would be glad to never see one of the originals again.
