Scanning - disappearing scan results

Hi - having trouble scanning. I understand the mechanics, the problem is scan result vanishing as I zero in on it (ie decrease probe range from say 16 to 8 au.)

I believe I have my filters set up correct: all possible results are checked in "edit filter" tab - ladar, grav, radar, mag, unknown. When I detect a "cosmic sig" as say 5% strength I home in on it but it disappears.

However I have found things recently - whs, misc sites - but most often the result disappears and I'm wasting a lot of time on this.

Ideas? Thx in advance

The site location shown in space is not accurate. With low skills it can be upto 50% off. So with 16 AU range, the site could be upto 8 AU off from the location you are shown. When you decrease range, your probes wont anymore cover the actual location and so it disappears.

Try using more probes and/or decreasing range of only single probe at time. If site disappears restore old range try again.

If you are serious about probing, definitely train better skills. "Astrometric Pinpointing" reduces maximum error.

Thx for reply - I'm using sisters probes (up to 7x at a time), i have Pinpointing lvl 3, other skill moderate. Still not sure why a signal just vanishes, or why I cant get past like 5% in some cases.

Is it related to filters? I have a special filter for only all 4 cos sig types, "unknown", and wormhole.

Yes, could be. Filters only filter out signals whose type is known, so initially you see everything but once you scan it well enough to know its type it can be filtered out.

Have you checked your vertical alignment of the probes. If you scan viewing the solar system from top down only you may be aligning the probes with the object on the x and y axis but be out on the z axis?

This burned me when I first started scanning - next time you see that, turn off the filters and see if the site reappears.

I've also had sites just plain disappear while I was scanning them down. Going back to a single probe scanning the entire area showed it really was just gone.
