So now we know that a few players are sitting on huge stockpiles of minerals. They are LONG the price of minerals and t1 goods (among other things). What makes this disclosure interesting....

1 - there are a "few".. in eve world, that is likely less than 100. More likely greater than 5 but less than 25.
2 - it is large enough to be mentioned in a macro economic blog... that implies big.

Since we know it was a speculative play, we also know the minerals have to come back to the market. We don't know the time horizon. Assuming they are players who enjoy the trading game, they would be looking to liquidate the position over the term of months, not years. Open question... what can we deduce from this and how should you play it if you are

A) station trader
B) T1 producer
C) opportunistic SOB

I know of at least one person who is/was stockpiling minerals just to take them out of the equation. As in, they won't be putting them back to the market (in "pure" or manufactured form).

Anyway,
If people with huge stockpiles are looking to liquidate over the term of months, one should possibly stay out of the markets. Well, that's what I'd do. Sure; you may be able to make a few bucks, but - depending on the size of the stockpiles - the markets may crash (hard).
So.. One could follow the markets, see if they're looking to crash. Get in, buy cheap, wait, sell high.

But, at least as a station trader, one should also be careful not to buy what one cannot sell. Even if it is a good deal, assets sitting around, appreciating with, say, 1% or less per month? There are better opportunities out there, better places to use isk, more isk to be made elsewhere.

As a manufacturer, I'd be hawking the mineral markets. I'd try to stay on top of prices as much as possible (read, more than normal), and see if there are cheap minerals to buy - and expensive ships/mods/... to sell.

Edit #2:
But I'm obviously not market savvy enough to take advantage of this, and as such, all of my suggestions are moot.

Also, you can profit in most situations. If these "whales" exist all you have to do is to sit on their back and enjoy the ride.

We are just about to enter the second wave of speculation and those who came late the first time take the chance to invest as long as prices are cheap.

Duno where you get the numbers, but I asume everybody reading devblogs and the latest patches carefully enough is willed to invest a partial in minerals and stuff. Some invest less, others even more, as their liquids allow to do so. So the mass of players makes it, not just a small group.

A) station trader -> keep the mineral stock as prices will grow for the next wave, Prices for Zyd, Nocx, Iosogen, Trit are still low enough to buy
B) T1 producer -> take adavantage of the high price volatility of minerals and products (i.e. ships, fitting) and buy low / sell high accordingly

From the announcement at Fanfest to implementation in Escalation, speculating traders stockpiled large quantites of minerals, for resale after launch.

Maybe it is more than i think... usually tho these patch type plays are executed by people with lots of isk to invest and the result is concentrated...

Well, I was actually one of those who benefitted off the patch as my illustrated whole trade process shows.

I am not totally sure about stuff going much up during the next 2-3 months though.
Not really watching the markets ATM, I am busy making PvP videos and playing GW2.
