Yeah, the quasi-scientific theory is that in December 2012 the Earth's magnetic axis will exactly align with the Milky Way galaxy's overall magnetic axis. That's because of the Earth's precession. The axis doesn't spin in one spot, it makes a loop every 26,000 years. The axis will reach a point in the loop aligning with the galaxy's magnetic poles.

Meanwhile, the solar system has its own magnetic axis, and the solar system is moving within the Milky Way. And the Milky Way is rotating. So the Earth is reaching a point where all of these magnetic axes will line up, a once in a million years event or something. In December 2012, these fields that have gradually been lining up will hit their ultimate alignment. The way two magnets suddenly snap together, when you gradually bring them close together-- that's what will happen when all the fields align. A sudden snapping into place of all the forces. The Earth's magnetic field will shift all over the place, which will disrupt the equilibrium of forces in the Earth's core, mantle, crust and atmosphere. So earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, storms, etc., etc.

That's the theory I read at least. I don't know how it checks out with the scientific community. I don't even know if they can detect or measure the overall magnetic fields of the solar system or the Milky Way.

Google the strength of the Galaxy's magnetic field.

It makes less sense than stating that placing a tiny pair of magnets on the Earth and on the Moon would cause the Earth and Moon to snap/crash into each other when the magnets happened to align.

Given how much we know about how magnets work I wouldn't try it

i didn't read this entire thread to begin with because all i have to say is that NASA and other space agencies don't seem to report incoming armageddon.

if anyone believes this date is true, they need medical help... isn't it obvious?

the only way i think the "world" will end, which obviously has to be our human planet is if the sun explodes or some unknown alien tribe creates a black hole on our planet because religious nutcases pissed them off.

i sure hope religion ceases to exist once immortality gets closer.

If the Mayans could actually predict the future...Shouldn't there still be Mayans?

Well, they accurately predicted the change of the last age. But when the time came, apparently they were looking for signs and misread some. The feather serpent god Quezalcoatl was supposed to come back. One of his guises is as a golden haired man. So when blondie Spaniard Cortes showed up, they thought he was Quetzal bringing in all the good stuff of the new age....

Cortes had black hair.
