moving into the ice mining business and wondered.....

*what is best way to make money mining ice
-should i sell the icicles?
-refine them?
-what?

ive seen there is big money in this but not sure how to get my slice ya know.

On another note, my friend and I were looking at setting up a hi sec pos to maufacture ammo, is this a wise move and cost effective?

you advice and tips is greatly appreciated.

Answer to both questions is maybe, maybe not. You got to do the math. Check my app in my sig to get started.

In general though, ice isn't a great use of time compared to ore.

Yeah, right now it is since prices are spiking. They will drop about 40% back to old values pretty soon.

oxy for example goes for 1.1k p/u which is just plain obscene, this is true now since it’s so incredible easy to gank mackinaws on highsec, but it won’t last. even with ganking as it is now, prices will drop. they did after the ice interdiction was over, even when the ganking did continue well into 2012.

also when mining ice you WILL lose mining ships.

Care to speculate on some details exactly what it is that you think will directly force the prices to drop?

Why do you think they will revert? With mineral price spike every smart miner should have gone to mine ore, thus leaving ice supply scarce. Thus it was only matter of time when ice caught up with mineral in average profitability (which should be a bit lower than mining minerals as ice mining is easier).

as someone else said, just do the math. see how much just a cube goes for compared to adding the cost of all the refined materials. even with my somewhat low ice refining skills i still make almost 25-50k more isk per cube at the moment when i refine. another factor is if you refine it makes hauling to a trade hub vastly easier.

test the unrefined vs refined value and factor in haul time.

also - you should verify this yourself but i'm fairly certain a stack of 100 cubes does not refine exactly proportionate to just 1 cube. try splitting up your stacks and do the math -it is worth it in the long run!

Use Dotlan to see what NPC corps have stations in ice belts you intend to mine in and rep one of them up to 6.67 so they don't take any of your stuff when you do refine. That way the only ice cube hauling you have to do is from the ice belt to the local station. Once refined, the materials are much easier to take to market.

In the cat-and-mouse game that is low sec, there is no shame in learning to be a better mouse.

Use your high sec pos for bpo research. As for Ice minng it depends on the market sometimes I sell the raw ice somtimes i sell the processed materials but 50% of the time i use my ice for my pos fuel. it all depends on the market and the region your in.

On a side not if you need Ice hauled mail me in game I can haul 9000,000m3 anywhere you need in high sec and I all my hauls are guarnteed and insured to arrive safely.

9Mil m3? Wowsers!

But yah, Ice mine with an orca and boosts, haul with a freighter, refine or sell according to your best judgement.

If you are refining you better ensure you're not wasting anything otherwise its almost not worth refining.

Check the spreadsheets!
