At the moment i am running round in a drake, not really doing anything in particular, just minding my own business Big smile doing a few lvl3 missions and managing quite well shield hold up well and missiles are hitting the targets.
my question is should i or do i need to upgrade to a raven or rokh or anything like that?

i also want to venture into low-sec however i don't want to loose my drake to the 1st trigger happy vet i come across so i would like to know what kind of ship should i use for my 1st recce? something small and agile and what should i fit it with?
am caldari trained in missiles

thanks for looking

Never touch a running system!

If you can do lvl 3 missions fine in your drake, keep it. If you have enough pocket money to upgrade your ship to a tengu, why not.

I think a raven is not optimal for lvl 3 becaus there are small / medium sized red crosses. A raven might be a good alternative in lvl 4 missions (a tengu will (imo) still outperform the raven).

For your first journey into lowsec pick something fast-aligning. Frigates are your choice probably (interceptors / assaultfrigs). Sadly i can´t supply you a fitting, i rarely use caldari frigates of any kind (besides crow and nemesis).

HINT:

If you´re unlucky the fastes ship wont save your ass. There are gateamps out there with multiple remote-sensor-boosted dedicated tackler with enough volley-damage-supply-ships where a interceptor feels like flying a brick.

Fly a merlin. Get basic blaster skills - wont take long to train and you might enjoy it :)

Fly a kestrel since you've the missile skills. The thing about low/null sec is that you will lose your ship sooner or later. You can't bring a bigger ship to be safe*. The best idea is to spend a little isk on a small and agile ship, like the kestrel, to get to know low sec. Everytime** you lose it, you'll learn something aswell and after enough lessons you'll be experienced enough to consider bringing bigger ships in low sec. I agree with the above poster though, keep that drake for mission running in high sec, buy new stuff for low sec.

* Some supercapitals might disagree but this isn't part of our discussions.
**Yes, fit out multiple of them, enough that they fill up your hanger and you'ld rather be rid of them. It's a good philosphy to start from.

what the previous posters stated is accurate about align time.

the issue at hand is warping away from a gate once in the system (where gate camps get you) warping away slower than (about) 4 seconds and your in a trouble zone.

also the drake is going to be dead in the water because other recon ships will be able to scan you down effectively. without a probe launcher you are limited to what you can do in system. and that is good for them. also without a cloak you cant hide.

since you have missile skills i wouldnt say merlin so much. . .to shoot a effective gun is no joke training wise.

i say make a cheap ship, t1, with no implants. . .then fly around and see what you see. if you get found or lost and blowd up. . .it not crazy serious financially.

now the problem with frigates is they cant handle many of the "cool" sites.

therefore i say heron. . .scan and find and seek and codebreak, cloak, get back safely at least for the first time

Nope. Get a jump clone. If you don't have the standings to do it yourself, join a jump clone service (there are lots available, look around). Don't put anything too expensive on your new clone.

Oh, and make sure you have Informorph Psychology trained first. Kind of pointless to join a service without that.
