Sensor dampener or tracking disruption?

Returning player from many years ago. Was a pve player before. I'd like to switch to mostly pvp this time for the thrill of challenge..and losing a lot.
I've got a decent amount of fitting and basic skills, at 9m sp now. I'm trying to decide where to focus, knowing I want to play the role of ewar to support a small group. Can someone give me their thoughts on sensor dampening or tracking disruption and their respective ships. Thank you.

At the moment I find the mechanics heavily skewed towards TDing. This may partially be due to damps having virtually no effect once you are locked - range damping rarely being of use, period - or it might be something about how the percentage-effects are applied.

It's also due to the fact that the main TD support platform - the Arbitrator - is an excellent support cruiser, with half decent DPS with good drone skills and capable of fitting an extremely solid tank even if the mids are filled with TDs. SDs, on the other hand, have to make do with the Celestis, which is largely a one-trick horse - not really tanky, terrible DPS, and no real use aside from SDing at range (or some odd gimped fits). The same holds for the T2 versions - while the Curse is a truly scary neuting/TDing/drone-ing-to-death monster, the Lachesis is more useful for its warp scram range bonus.

Sensor damps are used the Celestis and Arazu. Lachesis gets a bonus to damps, but commonly uses the slots for multiple bonused points or shield tank. Maulus doesn't have enough slots to really use damps. Keres also gets a bonus and coud be an interesting ship, but I don't know if there are many EWAR frigates on Tranquility, and certainly not in regular combat service :P

You'll almost always want to use scripts with damps, range scripts are a bit more universal than scan resolution scripts. Scan res damping works against large ships and is deadly combined with ECM drones, for example, making them a good choice to support a small ship gang. Range damps work against other EWARm snipers and logistics.

Arazu can tackle a battlecruiser and damp it down enough so the BC can't lock him back, which is pretty neat and much more powerful than TDing. Arazu is a great ship (Force recon, cloaky long-range tackler), and the one you should train for if EWAR support for small gang is your thing. It also unlocks the Lachesis, which is used a lot as large fleet tackle.

Celestis is a cool, cheap anti-Falcon ship that can fit a decent tank and use 4 medium drones along with bonused guns to contribute in dps as well. Fly the Cel to learn the style, you'll want to cancel fleet warps and warp in at your range, swap scripts, manage cap and choose targets based on your own judgement etc. It has good survivability for a T1 cruiser, I think I have about 20:2 k/l ratio in the Celestis.

At the moment, damps are just a bit underwhelming, even a dedicated damping platform can't effectively damp more than 1 or 2 targets (depending target size) and damps use a lot of cap and not all damping ships get bonus to cap usage. CCP Soundwave has said that they are looking to rebalance damps, and will focus on the ships that use them.

I'm personally looking forward to a slight damping buff, but nevertheless they are an interesting EWAR type and I recommend trying them out Cool

The best use of sensor damps is to throw a few on random ships in lew of tackle in a small gang to damp down the inevitable falcon that is going to decloak 80-100 from you. Best falcon counter there is TBH.

The keres is a nice ship to shoot for as its agility allows it to disengage quickly, aim for that for now.

If you want to pvp more and can fly a tech II frigate like an interceptor, SB, Assault ship or that keres you can also learn the ropes by joining NA.

Second shameless plug of the day.Pirate

Noir. and Noir Academy are recruiting apply at www.noirmercs.com I Noir Academy: 60 days old must be able to fly at least one tech II frigate. I Noir. Recruits: 4:1 k/d ratio and can fly tech II cruisers.

It depends a lot on what your flying and what your opponent is flying.

Solo I would prefer tracking disruption, and in a fleet I would prefer sensor damps.

When you are solo it can be a huge advantage to have a tracking disruptor because you can greatly decrease incoming damage from certain ships. However a sensor damp would only benefit your solo if you were attempting to stay a distance, which limits you to a few ships and even fewer possible targets.

Sensor damps in gangs can be used to wreak havoc on logistics, ewar, and long range ships. Mostly though they are great for making logi pilots work to keep their reps going.

Tracking Disruptors work best in fights where they are completely unexpected.
