we had a final meeting this morning at the office with me , i used to be his boss, the head of the HR dep , some others and the guy trying to convince him to stay

just found it hard to believe that what i thought was a intelligent man like him is throwing away a 20 year carreer as a civil servant just for a hype ,

makes me angry

Will you hire him again in 2013? Only if he wants to come back, ofc.

It's actually wishful thinking, like communal suicide of sorts.

The worlds a pretty horrible place, and there is a lot of helplessness. If I was stuck on a ship full of perversion and torture the idea of it sinking would be better then looking forward to a lifetime on it.

Just curious, since a guy i knew at work is absolutely convinced it will and quited his job last week and is about to move with his family to some community
Seems like nothing or nobody can convince him to change his mind

I partly blame the media for that , in the last 2 years there been nothing but these documantries about it , nostradamus, the mayas, book of revelations , planet x etc

Its not the end of the world. It's the end of the world as we know it. Things are changing, things have already changed. Take a look at the dictators having to step down from 30 years in power. We're not going to suddenly burst into a big ball of flames or cease to exist all of a sudden. The world is just changing.

We would have to account for leap years when converting their calendar to ours, not the Mayans.

Actually we've already adjusted our calendar date to most accurately match theirs.

Quote:

The Mayan calendar completes its current “Great Cycle” of the Long Count on the 13th baktun, on 13.0.0.0.0. Using the most common conversion to our modern calendar (the Gregorian calendar) the end of the “Great Cycle” corresponds to 11:11 Universal Time (UTC), December 21, 2012, hence the myriad of doomsday prophecies surrounding this date.

So close...

Ahh, communes. They never work out do they.

Now see here Charles, you work all day and put the fruits of your labor into a communal pool. This pool of community resources then gets redistributed back to the community fairly to every family. I tell you Charles, this is the Utopia right here on earth. We cant do it without you!

1 year later

Charles looks around, sees Mary Joe sitting on her behind for the last 2 months because of hangnail. Jim Bob and his seven teenage brides spend all their time fornicating and are too tired afterwards to work and can barely stand in line for their share of the daily meal, the poor dears. Charles looks at the 5 acres he turned into a lush garden plot with only the help of his wife and 2 kids then looks back at the communal building housing 20 other Mary Joes and Jim Bobs. Charles angrily wonders why he is doing all of the work while others are loafing about all day.

Angry words are then exchanged between the few hard workers like Charles and those that think they work hard. The Utopian Community comes crashing down.

Perhaps you should send this little story in an email link to the guy even though it is a tad too late seeing how he quit already.

Best answer to prepare for hardtimes and end of the world scenarios? Dont quit your day job and watch a few Doomsday Prepper episodes if you want to be prepared in a serious, or crazy depending on your viewpoint, way. You can always eat your food stockpiles if the end doesnt come but you cant eat ifyou dont have any resources because you were a numpty and quit your job.

I remember my grandmother in australia telling me about many people going and waiting at the top of a local hill for the end of the world due to the signs . the signs being a comet , hailys comet actully , looking at it she was born around 1900 so it must have been the 1909 / 10 ? pass . ( i rememebr the 82 pass )

Alot of important local people looked a bit silly the next morning , expect the same at the end of this year .

The Mayan calendar doesn't actually predict an end of the world on Dec. 21, 2012. It predicts the end of the current age or cycle, not the complete end of humanity. But the end of each age is marked by a sharp shift, not a gradual change. World-changing disasters, kind of like a Noah's flood event. The last time the calendar showed an age shift, Hernan Cortes invaded Central America. A disaster for the people there, but not the whole world. Check out Religions of Mesoamerica by David Carrasco (an anthropology book, not New Age book).

That's what I was saying. We have to adjust our calendar to theirs and account for the leap years to get the date that we got, not the other way around as Jett0 was mentioning.

Sorry, I was supplementing your statement, not rebutting it. Lol "Actually" was a poor choice of words. "As a matter of fact" would have been a better phrase to lead in with.

Sorry!

the mayan calender is incredibly accurate. the only thing the calender says is that its the end of an age or era, I think something will happen, not ending the world but our way of life..
Read somewhere the on that day the earth, sun and center of the galaxy will align in a way that only happens every few thousand/millions/ of years..

I believe something will happen, but not doing anything drastic, living life the way I want hoping its just a giant rock.

It may not be the end, but seems sth is going to change.

Well, they accurately predicted the change of the last age. But when the time came, apparently they were looking for signs and misread some. The feather serpent god Quezalcoatl was supposed to come back. One of his guises is as a golden haired man. So when blondie Spaniard Cortes showed up, they thought he was Quetzal bringing in all the good stuff of the new age....
