how about enabling V-Sync so framerates dont exceed monitor refresh rate. I.E. 60hz or fps which eliminates tearing when panning the camera, lowers power consumption, and prevents overheating. This is overlooked by many individuals.

Just like a car, if it can do 180mph, which is unnessessary, just do the speed limit at 60, save gas(I.E. power) and have a more fluid experience.

Looking at your computer specs, a few things jump out at me. First, you have a decent GPU, but the rest of your set up seems to be far behind it. An E5200 is not up to supporting the potential of the 550 ti (and the mother board this CPU is pluged into is probably not much better.) Not only does it have a very small cache, but it only supports 800mhz FSB which means textures and effects are probably bottle-necking there (constantly having to be loaded into GPU cache, see bellow.) In addition, you are using a 32 bit OS, which will only support up to 3 gigs of RAM. This total also includes the on board memory for your video card and any accessories you have with on board random access memory. If you are trying to ask the OS to handle 4 gigs of RAM plus 1 gig of on board on the 550 ti, then it is probably not handling this gracefully.

TL:DR

You are using too much memory for a 32 OS, get 64 bit. Your GPU is not the bottleneck in your system.

Amazing smackdown, earned a like :P

Still a thanks to the gents helping out, can play this silly game again ,
and even dualbox if needed.

And actually learned a thing or 2 about computers :)

( hell if i know what the diffrence is between a 32 or 64 bit OS and that its linked to memory and stuff )
Guess were not all IT experts :p

I use Intel Integrated graphics, and my computer still (barely) runs the game, so long as I don't jump a gate or undock from a station unless I want to black screen. Wormholes ftw.

Ok hearing all this about the 550 confuses me.

I use the 450GS along with an old duel core, and I can play EVE along with several other recent games at max with only 60C @ 55% fan speed.

Is the 450 better than the 550?

Edit: another question is there a way to upgrade from a 32b to a 64b OS without having to reinstall everything on my computer (most programs are on a separate partition from my OS, so what I mean is the registry)?

if you have no issues with the 450gs, dont worry about upgrading it, the temps are perfectly fine.

The naming scheme with graphic cards can be confusing, if you want to see the differences, goto www.tomshardware.com and look at the graphic charts.

You CANNOT unfortunately upgrade to x64 or down grade either., only a fresh install can you actually switch between the two(x86 or x64)

The game runs great on my rig, and I have a 550 Ti, too. But, compared to your setup, I've got an i7 2600k. It's not only the GPU, your CPU needs to be up to it, too. Now, my i7 is a bit of an overkill for EVE, but a better CPU does make a huge difference.

My old rig, however, (AMD x64 5600+ & 8800GT) runs Inferno pretty well. I go for medium settings, but missiles are maxed out and it runs just fine (~50-55 FPS)
