I'm enrolled in FW, and I was running a minor plex in a kestrel when all of a sudden a Worm appeared at 8km next to me, popping me. My questions is: how did he only appear in 8km, and not at ~60km where the gate warps him?

Before you ask, I'm 100% sure he just appeared/warped next to me, and I couldn't have missed him coming from 60km.

simple answer, he couldn't, you must have seen wrong.

other possibilites ...

- a bug with the warp in
- an overview glitch.
- you took your eyes off your overview for a few seconds and he closed the gap.

That's what I figured, but the thing is, I was not alone in the plex. I was running it with my brother, he saw the same thing. But, if you say it's impossible, then I will blame maybe the fact that we took our eyes of the overview... However, even if he had a MWD fitter it would take him around 30 seconds to get to us, with an afterburner even more, so the chances of not seing anything for over 30seconds are quite small.

Also, he was not enrolled in FW, just a regular pirate, maybe that has something to do with it?

Did he appear on overview after you noticed him engaging?

It is fully possible that you both missed his arrival, but it could also be an overview glitch or a case of you setting your overview up wrong, to possibly removing him from your overview completely. If none of these are the fact, he could even have flown a ship with a cloak, landed on grid and cloaking without you noticing (or, if the complex was already up, waited inside, cloaked) then attacked once he was close enough.

I have no idea how FW sites work but couldn't he have been in the site already, cloaked, and waiting for someone to arrive and run it?

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

Yeah, neutrals (people not in FW) can spawn the plex's and wait around for you to come in. Enjoy.

FW plexes are cosmic anomalies, found at 100% with just the on-board scanner, that pop a beacon when anyone initiates a warp towards one. Apart from Major Strongholds, all FW plexes have an acceleration gate. Logging into EVE after logging out inside a FW plex sometimes puts you where you were within the plex and sometimes puts you at the acceleration gate -- which happens doesn't seem to have anything to do with how long you're logged out, but maybe how you're logged out.

So here are three possibilities:

1. The beacon for this site was already up, and the Worm was cloaked inside. The OP can go through the killboard history of his killer to see if he has lost any cloaky Worms. Battleclinic's killboard is best for getting info like this.

2. The beacon was already up, the Worm was in the site and logged out when he saw the OP on shortscan. He logged back in shortly after, and landed near the button, and locked the OP up. Maybe this is a reliable 'login trap' in a Major Stronghold.

3. The OP didn't use his dscan, didn't get an early warning about the Worm, lacked familiarity with the wonder/terror of a faction frig overheating its MWD, and was so caught off-guard that he misremembers what happened.
