Hi all,
I am a relatively old player, but so far I played industrial char. I am still playing with him now, but i decided to finally test myself with a new char at combat too.

Now, while I have some knowledge about industry, combat is completely new to me.

At first I wanted to play Gallante because (as I thought) they have weapons with most long range. However by reading forum I realized that no one is using railguns.

I started to think what race/ship class I want if Gallante "sniper" is useless after all.

So, as I understand there a few types of advanced frigates -

Assault - just a machine for kills, without specific tactics.

Covert Ops & Stealth bombers - as I understand their advantage is some kind of invisibility. But my main question here - can I attack enemies while cloaked or I can only pass by undetected? Is there any usage of stealth bomber against small ships? I also read that stealth bombers are limited in high-sec (can't use bombs), is that so?

Electronic warfare - don't understand their usage, explain please.

Interceptor - as I see they are very fast, the question is - what weapon is best with such a high speed. If I use Gallante with blasters - will they do any good?

So far I am not interested in ships larger then frigates, that's it what I need for a start.

What ship class fits for what situation, what's better for PvP? what's good for missions etc... What weapons/ships are better and in which situations.

I am not worried about money, my industry char has enough.
Thanks in advance.

I'm not going to talk about missions because quite honestly I have no idea.

For PvP purposes, basically all combat orientated frigates are useful. Frigates have differing tactics - some get in close and apply dps or kite and apply dps (Assault Frigates and, I suppose, stealth bombers). Some tackle (Fleet interceptors). Some act as force multipliers by their use of ewar (electronic attack frigates). Some hunt and find targets for your fleet (covert ops frigates).

Essentially frigates types are simply role types for use within a fleet. If you are not looking for fleet work I would suggest that you look at assault frigates and combat interceptors - they will provide you with the most flexibility and ability to go at it solo. That said, there are a few other frigates that can be used as solo boats even though they look like fleet boats (eg: sentinal)

Really, it depends upon what kind of PvP you are looking to engage in. If you are starting out and are not sure what you are doing, I would strongly suggest that you buy yourself a couple of cheap T1 frigates and go out and shoot at people. Don't put too much thought into the ship type / fitting, but try and learn something when you die (which you will). Once you have a better understanding of how frigate PvP works and what tactics are available to you, rinse and repeat the above with T2 frigates.

I would also suggest that you look into joining a decent pvp corp - there is a lot to be learnt about frig pvp and it really helps to have someone guide you.

Good luck!

Thank you for reply, I'll wait for more answers before I decide what to do next.

And please answer my question - can stealthed ship attack while staying invisible?

No, you can't target anything or activate any modules, or move items to/from your cargohold (including reloading modules) while the cloak is active.

With Covert Ops cloak you can warp while cloaked and move fast while cloaked, the other two cloaking devices require you to decloak for warping, and also seriously slow your speed while cloaked. They also make your target locking slower.

Do some forum searching, there are many good, older threads with solid advice and links to good guides. You could start from the EVE Uni wiki http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Category:Guides for the very basics.

Your first order of business is to find a good corp and start asking questions from those who have done PvP.

So I try to be short and lay out some basic stuff which you should first read out:

Turret mechanics in EVE

security status

sentry guns

aggression timers

No it can't, you cannot target while cloaked nor activate any modules, nor warp unless the ship has covert ops cloaking device fitted.

This!

OP: Too many questions!

You can't learn to pvp from a forum. Experience is the best teacher. Forums are best used to get answers to specific questions.

If you're serious about learning to pvp you MUST join a decent PVP corp. There are several that exist to provide pvp instruction (e.g. EvE Uni or Agony Unleashed). This is an MMO so you will learn fastest from flying with/against other players.

Also, download EFT (EvE Fitting Tool) and play around with ship setups and try them out. If ISK is an issue install a test server client (Singularity or "Sisi") and you can try them out for free!

There are also plenty of EvE videos (see the MyVideos forum section and also YouTube) which will accelerate your learning but there is no shortcut to undocking to try and kill stuff.

Op you have too many questions and don't give the most important information, are you going to pvp:

-in high sec

-low sec

-null sec

-WH's

-room from one system type to another

However, if you really want to stick to frigate sized ships you can probably take whatever from assault frigates to faction ones, all of those are awesome and don't expect a frigate fight to last more than a few seconds once engaged.

I'd strongly recommend Amarr and Minmatar T2 frigates, train destroyers up to 5 and then switch to Interdictors.

At frigate size you have either in Amar or Minmatar some very strong little beasts, add that training this will give you access to Blood Riders faction ships, and those are all sweet, eventually add a few more days training gallente and you can access to OMGFKINPWN Angel frigates ;)

Interdictors: those are frigate hunters, have enough slots so you can fit a bubble for nul a cloack and you still keep 6 gun slots to dish a very decent amount of dmg to kill frigates, haulers, some cruisers and everything flown by lazy people.
Training for these is never a waste of time, you really want those.

Plus, when you can fly an armour and a shield interdictor you're always the welcome wherever you go, and you're in all kill mails :)

Answering your questions would probably not help you but make you ask even more, taking this route will be good all the way.

To the OP, i would reccomend getting into all the Gallente T1 frigates, check out all their stats and you will find they are tiered so that there is one best one for PVP, one best for electronic warfare, one for intercepting etc. get one of each and fly them, see what works for you.

And as said above, a good corp makes a world of difference!

I thank all who answered me. I already started reading Uni Eve Wiki, as Roime suggested. I'll try to get into PvP corp as soon as possible.

No, seriously, if you want to get into PVP, it's one of the best choices you can make.

Some people will strongly disagree. RvB tends to enforce some variety of fairness in the fights, which is totally and utterly lacking in real PvP. You will get blobbed, baited and beaten, but over time you'll learn to avoid some ships and pursue others.

If I were you, I'd do what others have suggested and buy 20 of some T1 frigate (Merlin, Punisher and Rifter are most popular, with Tristan, Incursus and Kestrel all being viable as well), buy a bunch of fittings, and just set about losing them all. After every ship dies (and they WILL die, trust me), try and reflect on what you could have done better, or if there was something you didn't understand. It can be incredibly helpful to FRAPS your fights, and then analyze them later on, especially if you can find someone skilled at PVP to help. When you can go several fights in a row and honestly tell yourself that it was the ship holding you back from a victory, not your character or player skills, it's time to consider upgrading to a new hull.

But the best advice is to find a group of players that can teach you, and bring you along on some fleet/gang work. You can learn a lot from watching experienced PvPers in action, and you'll get some much more interesting (and potentially lucrative) killmails with a few friends along.

RvB are awesome people, like Eve Uni and you'll have the time to train/learn basic stuff and a lot more. There are always people over there willing to answer you and help you grow up, how to fit ships, understand why this or that skill is necessary and effects on your gaming experience.

It's not Kitty on line corporation, it's a real pvp corporation and you WILL pvp, just in better conditions than you can usually find out in some random corp when you know nothing about Eve, and trust in Eve is something you can't afford to give it for free.

Instead of promoting gank/scam and other creepy stuff they promote clean pvp, it's a choice that might or might not be the one it sticks to you.

Some null sec corporations accept and like newbies, they put you right on the field with some of the most experienced dudes in this game with your little frig barly fited with T1 mods close to titans and hundreds of other players.
Most often those alliances/corporations offer a good training program, free ships and skill books, learn you how to survive in very hostile environment, win isk and most important: and awesome social experience. This is also a good way to go.

low sec/null sec piracy is also interesting, much more interesting than high sec gate/station camping but once again depends if you like to bully others with an angel smile just because you can.
I'd strongly recommend you to move out of high sec as fast as you can, but hey, null/low is not for pussies, it's harsh stuff (depends on witch side you are hehe)
