Normally, I run tracking computers with tracking scripts in my amarr ships but ran into someone the other day who swore painters were much better.

Any thoughts on this? I did play around with a painter and didn't notice much difference, but as one of the gains of a painter is it helps other pilots, I would not really see that gain.

http://wiki.eve-id.net/Tracking

(Transverse * SigResolution) / (Tracking * Range * SigRadius)

Tracking Computer II w/Tracking Script 30% bonus, aka (1.3 * Tracking * Range * SigRadius)
Target Painter II = 37.5% bonus (at skills V), aka (1.375 * Tracking * Range * SigRadius)

A TP provide more tracking, for you and the rest of your fleet, but can't be converted to give a optimal range bonus instead when you want it. Beyond that, they are on different stacks: 1 TP and 1 TC will give you the full bonus of both, while 2 of one or the other will have the second one stacking penalized. That also applies across the fleet though, if you have 20 BS with 1 TP and 1 TC each, ~16 of those TPs will do almost nothing due to stacking.

So, as usual in EVE: It depends.

Important to remember: if you use a painter on a target the whole gang get the benifit. A tracking computer works only for you.

Also, TCs affect your guns against all targets, TPs have a cycle time per target, not so good for PvE.

You probably just phrased it wrong, but it isn't across the fleet that the target painting stacking occurs, it happen on the target... fleeting doesn't make a difference.

One other thing about TP. TP has optimal and falloff.

TC does not have those. It just works.

My guess is that if you are willing to micromanage, use TP.
