I honestly have no idea what to go for... most topics I've read were from 2008, and the patches from then may change things.:),

They call it Winmatar for a reason Blink

Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Sometimes when I post, I look at my sig and wish that I'd follow my own god damned advice.

There is a unique trait with this game in that you are not limited to a certain build. So the question that you really should ask is not what should you go for but what should you go for first.

Currently (as in right now, today), I would strongly suggest Minmatar over Gallente. I went Gallente myself (on this relatively new char, just reaching 10 million SP) and knowing what I know now, I wouldn't hesitate even a second if someone offered me to exchange all of my Gallente skills to Minmatar equivalents. There's just no comparison between the two.

Supposedly, some things are going to be rebalanced. But I feel Gallente are still so far behind that it will take years to fix, if they ever get fixed at all.

Good example of this is drones, supposedly Gallente racial weapon system (like projectiles for Minmatar and lasers for Amarr and missiles for Caldari). Other weapon systems all have damage-increasing modules. Drones do not, though one is being added next patch. However, this new module is much weaker than other races' modules. Similarly, other weapon systems have implants that increase their performance. Drones have no such implants. Other weapon systems have rigs that increase their performance. Drones have one such rig, which only affects one drone type - sentries. Etc., etc. This is just one example where Gallente get the fuzzy end of the lollipop.

In short, go Minmatar. I wish I did.

It really depends on what gameplay style and tanking method you prefer. Training both will give you access to lots of tactical choices.
Go Gallente if you:
-have better armor than shield skills (there are exceptions of course)
-like drones
-prefer rate of fire/close range brawling
-want a slightly higher challenge
-BALLSTERS, holy hell, hybrids were de-nerfed so can get scary good up close
Go Minmatar if:
-you generally have better shield skills
-you want decent damage projection at multiple ranges and damage type flexibility
-prefer kiting to brawling
-prefer burst damage (artillery) or lower dps but with good falloff
-have meh drone skills
-prefer flying fotm (don't get me wrong, they're good)

Edit:Gallente aren't as bad as they sound. I've been experimenting with the Astarte, for example, and, woof.

First come smiles, then lies. Last is gunfire.

Don't listen to the FOTM folks.
There are lots of ships in each race that are totally viable and good in PVP.

So there is no point in telling you what ships to go for, it's your decision.

By the way, things do change quite a bit with time, so if you are following the FOTM, you'll probably end in disappointment.

Amarr had a long time being considered FOTM. Lasers hit far, well and hard. Plate buffers are awesome. Cap warfare is awesome. Tracking disrupt is quite nice to have.

Caldari was never bad, except for the time it takes for missiles to hit. Missiles are still strong, and better with the speed nerf. ECM is still OP. They still have ships that use Hybrids.

Minmatar used to be bad, only had speed. Projectiles sucked and speed got nerfed. Then they fixed projectiles and suddenly some people think Minmatar have the advantage. Today, Minmatar has a little bit more speed than the others, projectiles hit far in falloff, but with low damage. Worst EW.

Gallente have the most hurt in close range, and AFAIK they always had. I remember Nano Megas MELTING everyone. Drones can be awesome, or not so much. Depends a lot on the situation. Gallente EW is considered weak, which to me is a mistake. It is strong in many situations. Having drones as main weapon is something the some people complain, but you should note that this makes your highslots FREE. See Domis for example.

Gallente is really good if you like smaller ships like frigates/cruisers.

Gallente in my op are the 2nd best race to PvP in
Minmatar are the best mainly due to the fact they have the speed... but then you can make lots of ships go fast
but at the end of the day it all depends how you fly and how you fit a ship. iv flown and seen drakes that go faster than a cane. i fly a ishtar that eat a vaga or lunch, iv been pounded to crap by a vaga just the same.

its not what you fly, its how you fly it

I fly both, though my cruisers skill is 5 for Gals and 4 for Minnie. I plan to train that next though, so it'll be a moot point shortly. I like having choices though, and being able to fly both gives me that.

For a new player, Winmatar. Capless weapons, you have superior speed and that means you have more chance of skinning out if you don't want to fight. Winmatar is the only race that has this option really. You will also have more chance at getting in to a decent corp if you can tell them you are new and training Winmatar.

Choice of race has 0 correlation with your pvp success.

Choose the one you like most, learn to fit and fly them well and you'll win, it's a player skill.

Do the terms "faillente" and "Winmatar" mean anything? Cool

But seriously, you have more to do with your ship than anything. Used to be that I could not survive without missiles and speed and gravitated to Minmatar but as I learned to play and fit ships, I got better and just recently ran the majority of level 3 missions in a Federation Comet just to see if it could be done.
