I have an odd question and given this is an international forum, maybe someone can answer this and explain this to me.

"Osama bin Laden"

he dies

"Usama bin Laden"

I dont understand why it changed.

Also NO political related talk, this about the guy's name, nothing else.

And, isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, oooh, the sky is the limit.

Weird, we call him one for ten years, they kill him, someone finally finds a signed paper, the name changes lol

Cmon, noone found anything he'd signed in ten years?

When you Google for it will you find out that the FBI always called him Usama. Only the press called him Osama. No one then cared about how to spell his name right, everyone wanted to kill him right.

They change the spelling of Al Qaeda now and then too. I think it's to keep it feeling mysterious.

Because it's hard to anglicize/put-into-roman-characters a language like Pashtu. Also, there are about 16 widely-spoken languages in the region including Arabic, Azerbaijani, Farsi, Pashtu (sometimes spelled Pashto, heh), Urdu, Turkish, Dari and various dialects of each. It depends on what language you translate from, who the reporter is etc.

Hell, even now that Chinese has Pinyin (roman characters to properly pronounce it) people still spell **** like Beijing as Peking and the old anglicization (not a real word) for other cities/places/words still make their ways into newspapers, etc...which is extra funny, since it's mostly based off Cantonese (Chinese has a hilariously large number of dialects, Mandarin is the standard now)

Osama's name is pronounced differently based on which language you say it in, and in Pashtu its not quite Oh-sama *or* OOsama, but more like Ouw-sama. Edit: Haha, I should say that's how I learned it, even that isn't completely accurate across all Pashtu speakers.

TL;DR: There is no overall guide to anglicizing most middle eastern languages...or really, most non-euro languages.

Hello, hello again.
