Ok I'm a bit conflicted on the subject of pre-ordering BF3.

On one hand the game looks utterly and completely awesome.
Looks great, had enough fun with BF:BC2 to think they can pull it off.

On the other hand there's Origin.
Potential spy ware which you have to waive your right to trial by jury to use.
I am not exaggerating on the second part.

Thoughts?

The battlefield 3 Beta is out right now for console/PC. Play it on either one.

here is an article for limiting origin's snooping: http://bf3blog.com/forum/topic/how-to-make-origin-stay-away-from-the-rest-of-your-computer

You use facebook? Google? Gmail? Any search engine? Websites using google analytics? Punkbuster? All mining your data. Also if you have a spare HDD just put it on there with no other data or just games.

Apparently there is way to "quarantine" origin as well.

As long as Origin keeps my info within their own company it doesn't bother me so much.

What bothers me more is that DICE are still using Punkbuster. Caused me nothing but headaches in BF2142, and hackers easily sidestepped it anyway, so all it accomplished was pissing off honest gamers like myself. I'm actually surprised they're still in business, offering such a shoddy service.

Has it greatly improved, or can i still expect to spend hours when i could be playing BF3 wrestling with that godawful program?

Got origin, installed to sand box.
And it required me to install a damn browser plugin!

Seriously, EA was pushing it already, why should I have to install a plugin to play a game I pay for? what does EA want with my browser?

**** that noise.

Me too.

I was at the pre-order page about a week ago and backed off from ordering it after reading the EULA for origin.

Might play it on the PS3 or wait for someone to create some kind of PC circum-navigate solution for that.

I got Steam and run that on an independant HDD which seems to be working well, but I think my issue is mainly the fact a piece of is running that I have no control over using system and network resources.

I'm sure it's just male marking of territory I don't take kindly too.

It's my rig, not theirs.

If it's true a browser plugin is mandatory that might be the clincher for me.

Beta is whack. Don't bother.

So many bugs and design issues. The terrain clipping, flashlights, sniper flare, players blending in 100% with their environment...

If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

What could they possibly need a browser plugin for?

Heh, there's always ways to circumvent it.
However, as long as you keep paying for crap you're gonna get worse crap. Have fun.

Hence the key word beta.... not release. (Which is a month away)

How many times must it be explained?

Beta is good for beta. The flashlights are working as intended, they blind you in close combat.

X360:

Pros
- Tactical weapons, enable on/off lasers/scopes/flashlights (almost like Vegas).
- Lighting such as sun glares or tactical flash light/laser lenses are realistic.
- Sounds like gun fire, explosions, echos, sound fantastic and real.
- Jumping over environments is easier, and jumping is realistic.
- Recoil, great.
- Squads and spawning on m8s is a nice feature brought from BC2.
- Equipment, and classes are well configured.
- Customize equipment ingame instead of after matches, unlocks can be added right away to your gun.
- Movement and direction gives character great versatility and able to conduct moves you couldn't otherwise do in the 4-direction step. (COD for ex.)

Cons
- Players float and do not actually walk. Sometimes causes you to run like a gimp or warped after jumping walls certain ways.
- Floating players also cause you to glitch into environments during prone. Such as ground or wall.
- Characters when running sometimes get "cramps" and suddenly cannot run unless you toggle crouch.
- Still can't hear footsteps, you can't hear anyone coming up behind you...
- Kits are terribly inconvenient to customize compared to CODs system.
- After spawning at deployment during the launch phase, you cannot go back and change kits until after you die.
- Players can sometimes slide or "moonwalk" (due to float) if they get clipped on certain parts on maps, such as ledges and will sometimes skate across the map 10meters or so. This could also be due if they have a bad connection to the dedicated server.

I did not download for PC cause there is no point, no jets and no origin crap ...

still have to play it more but that's my first impressions.

I caved.

Installed it earlier - played it for a few hours, not much more and the beta maps are interesting.

It's got a bad company feel to it on multi-player and the maps feel large.

The animation and graphics overall are good, even on my crappy system - but feel there is much more to see if I had DX11 capable.

Only criticism is the pivot point of the gun, it feels like it is behind your point of view - instead of directly proportional to the image that is being displayed. Also feels like it accelerates as you twitch, which puts shots off by a few degrees.

It does have a real-world feel to it, instead of a bunny-hop, kapow, bunny-hop, head shot.

It is *very very rare* that a beta is any different from the retail version - Open beta anyways. A month is not enough time to fix those issues, especially since you have to take 3 weeks off for cd printing and logistics, unless you want a day1 patch - Which still doesnt give enough time.

Given a month yeah plenty of time. Bad Company 2 beta also had issues and game play was a tad different. (Also given that BF3 im guessing is going to sell mostly DL not box sales)

What game have you known in the last 2-3 years that got launched and didnt have a needed patch 1-2 months later anyway? (especially multiplayer centric games) Christ look at eve they release new bug fixes then need to emergency patch those!

Clipping issues are one of the main reasons they have betas. You just cant test the collision detection on every edge and slope as well as thousands of people playing the game can.

I pre-ordered back in May, I'm weak, the beta rush map Operation Metro is horrible, just my opinion.

Never got a chance to play Caspian border but those lucky few who did are raving about it, not convinced on the sunlight reflecting off the sniper scopes seems a bit silly, clipping and physics issues are as hilarious as they are annoying but its a beta so can't grumble too much.

My system is a i7 920 at 3.6GHz, 2x 275 in SLI and 6gig of DDR3 and the gfx cards are just about holding up on medium to low settings at 1920x1200, that's using the beta drivers that are optimized for BF3, was due a gfx upgrade so it looks like it's time to get a 570.

Aside from the crappy map I'm enjoying it, still p1ssed I never got a chance to play Caspian Border tho.

I would not use any game that needs Origin. Not that I really want to play most EA games anyways. I mena, BF3 is just the same game all over again with a little bit prettier graphics. And people eat it up and pay full price.

This game made my four-year old desktop computer curl up in a fetal position and cry. I guess it's time for a replacement. Four years is a pretty good run for a gaming rig though.

From what I've played of the beta, the game seems really really really damn good - Seems to be a true sequel to BF2.

It's not okay to sell a broken product.

That said, buying it anyway >_>
