My first character(which I have had for about a year) is a Gallenteen armor style pilot and this 2nd character I just got is Caldari so he will mostly depend on shield defense. Normally with my first pilot I don't enable the hardeners and reppers until my shield is about gone. So should I turn on the shield hardeners with this Caldari pilot as soon as I enter the mission and start taking damage?

The simple answer is yes. If you are using active shield hardners you should be able to be cap stable perma running your hardners.

Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if you're in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. Pub Channel: Lost Souls Trading Post

Typically one not only manages their shield / armor, but their capacitor too.

If your capacitor is high, say over 60%, then a few early cycles to repair some damage is fine.

If your capacitor is lower, say 50%, you'll want to hold-off until the shield drops below 50% (as you get more accustomed to it, you can go lower on both capacitor and shield).

Generally with shield, you can tank at about 33% shield if you have enough recharge for the incoming damage. Below 25%, recharge drops noticeably, so if you can't keep the shield above that 25%, you should make a run for it.

Shield and capacitor use the same recharge formula.
