Whats the best Positions to have 6 active probes in? So far I've been using the "Ball" method (4 probes to either side of the single, 1 above, and 1 below, each overlapping slightly on the edges of their range), but I've heard there are better methods. Anyone know what they are?

The one in each direction works fine, I personally use a similar layout with one probe in each direction and one in the middle (for 7 probes total). One thing I would suggest that you change, however, is the overlap range.

I've found that having the edge of one probe touch the centerpoint of the opposite probe (so the left probe's bubble just touches the center of the right one, and so forth) to be the best amount of overlap.

After that, it's just practice probing. After a while you develop a bit of a gut instinct about how the probes will move around as you narrow in on them and it can save you a lot of time probing.

Also, if you don't know about Shift and Alt for moving probes around, learn how to use them Blink

The way quadrangulation works means that you need four non-coplanar reference points within range of something to find a point using rangefinding alone.

So, you're only really going to be pinning down points in the overlap regions. Rather than alter your probe layout (I'm a fan of the cardinal directions method too, it's nice and fast to adjust) I'd honestly just train one more level to get seven probes and leave one in the middle, turning all of those 3-overlap regions into 4-overlap regions and letting you grab actual finished points much faster in the same area.

This thread could be full of innuendo.

How do you position the first one then?

6 probes are basically useless, I've never seen a setup that benefits from a 6th probe over 5.
use 5, 7 or 8.

8 is by far best.
