Mild enthusiasm : How about a "Talk like an Elcor HK-47" forum trend ?

Factual statement : It is known that facial expressions and voice inflexions can be extremely difficult to express in writing, but they are instrumental to the proper communication between people. Studies show that people often misinterpret e-mails, IMs and forum posts due to the lack of those cues.

Hopeful query : Would it not be so much better (even if it takes slightly more effort to both post and read) if you could embed some of those visual and auditory cues into your written text ?

Half-jokingly : We have two (relatively well-known) instances where such information was successfully added - namely, the Elcor in Mass Effect, and HK-47 in Knights of the Old Republic.

Tentative request : How about if we start trying to (at least occasionally) emulate (at least partially) one or both of those methods whenever we post in the forums and see how that goes ?
Sarcastically : Then again, that would be too much of a bother and we really like all the flame wars that ensure over a minor misunderstanding caused by somebody that doesn't get that something is meant to be a joke or not be taken too seriously.

Amused : So, anybody else want to join this crazy initiative ?

I like the associated ambiguity of emotion in written communications.

No one is quite sure if you are laughing at them, with them, yelling, angry, sad. Sarcasm detectors running more in the ~not sure~ region than otherwise.

People have been broken hearted, fired, possibly even killed because of this. I like that.

Let's not change.

Mild annoyance : Yes, it's called the Elcor race, as already stated in the OP and even thread title.

amused pondering: Wouldn't the Elcore HK-47 tags also be subject to the problem of (mis)-interpretation?

Factual statement: meatbags are not sufficiently disciplined for such a logical approach to communication

Expectation: utter failure

mildly pained: Pre-pending Elcor/HK-47 tags is requiring me to think about what I'm feeling or what my mood is when formulating the tag. The "getting in touch with your feelings" aspect is starting to grate.

reluctant perseverance with cautious optimism: However, the experiment shall continue.

statement; Some Americans dont get sarcasm or irony when face to face with brits so when faced with just text they tend to struggle. But if we started out saying we were being sarcastic/ironic it spoils the fun.

Appeasing remark : Yes, indeed, it does take a bit more effort than I would have had expected during initial trials.

Exasperated amusement : There's not that many different ways to properly express what you want to say most of the time (in 95% of cases a rather short dropdown list will most likely do just fine)... so maybe we should reserve this type of prefixing just for those cases where we believe the tone would be likely to be misinterpreted ?

Pensive : On the other hand, I notice it's NOT JUST more effort in constructing the proper prefix after the fact - it's actually changing the CONTENTS of your post due to the stated prefix ! Maybe not always on a conscious level, but still, it's there.
Intrigued : This is something that warrants further investigation.
