If you started research with an r&d agent and your account ran out of time would your character still generate points and be able to use them when you go back online?

Nope. It used to be the case where you could set R&D going and let your account lapse, but that was changed several patches ago. No more ghost R&D.

You can, however, still use the R&D points you stockpiled prior to your account expiring.

As Exodius says, it used to be the case that RP's would continue being allocated when your account was inactive, but they changed it in 2010 in this devblog

Yeah too bad back when I started playing back in 2006 I didn't start doing R&D than, I didn't start doing that till last year sometime I think. I could've made a nice chunk of isk from ghost R&D agents, especially since I usually play for a month or 2 than leave for 6months.
