On the old forums we had sections for announcement and discussion of various things either in development or testing, or even just being kicked around. The status on fixing known bugs also had a section there.

Do you remember it?

Probably not, nobody ever went there and the information stopped being maintained after awhile.

Perhaps these sections could reappear on the new forums, and become someone's pet project to keep updated and accurate.

I have this irking feeling that one of the main issues CCP has is that they themselves don't even have such a list.

Excuses are the refuge of the weak.

You've got the sequence wrong, but yeah, it would be nice if something like that came back. If CCP has any kind of project management reporting process this shouldn't be difficult.

…and when, inevitably, you cannot do what you have said, don't worry. Just explain why.

You'd be amazed how cool and calm people can be with the most calamitous changes of direction and ridiculously missed occasions if you just take the time to explain why it came to happen the way it happened, especially if you do it as soon as it becomes clear that avoiding this change is impossible. Moving a deadline forward before it is due for a properly explained reason is like driving through fog — perhaps a bit slower than usual and possibly a bit disconcerting, but the fog will move out of the way. Moving a deadline after the fact and for no adequately explained reason is like replacing the fog with a brick wall…

Vincent Athena wrote:
"We watch what you do, not what you say"

If you really think that's true, and nothing CCP says has value, do you think they should say anything?

Its odd, as I see two lines of thought going on in the forums. One is the above, and the other is CCP does not communicate enough. But as soon as CCP does communicate, they get slapped down with the above statement.

So what do we want them to do?

My suggestion:

Say what you do.
Do what you say.
We watch both.

It's not that we want CCP to stop taking to us - far from it. "what you do, not what you say" doesn't mean we don't want them to say anything, it means we want them to start delivering to us. It's not that the profession of contrition and the admissions of error aren't good to see, it's just that CCP have exhausted their credit with their customers. From now on, all we will accept are firm commitments on actual resources and actual delivery of code on Tranquility. Anything else scores no points.

It's a cultural issue: they're not a cute little startup who can trade on starry-eyed visions alone any more, they're a medium size company with hundreds of employees, and people expect them to start actually producing those visions and engaging with the task in front of them on a professional basis, rather than Icelandic brosefery.

Even now, there are many thousands of disenchanted EVE players who (deny it though they might) would come flooding back if CCP show that they're actually going to serve up more than :awesome: promises. Whatever other mistakes CCP have made with EVE, they have at least kept the core values of the game intact, and that means that the situation is recoverable - if they're prepared to undertake that step-change in the way they work.

A sustained commitment to deliver that focus on FiS would work wonders on CCP's customer satisfaction, on rebuilding their brand, and providing sustainable income for the years to come.

The ball is in their court.

Without reading all the responses so far I just want to say...

I think the biggest problem is that no matter what CCP says or does, the naysayers and doomsayers are out here ripping everything apart and freaking out over every little statement or word that doesn't "jive" with thier dream or vision of what EvE should be. This while completely forgetting that EvE is CCP's game and CCP's vision not the players. We are here to play the game not force CCP to create it exactly how we want it. CCP will not be able to please everybody. Constructive criticism is fine...but the shitstorm of late is out of control.

That said...CCP...the "Beating the dead horse POS thread"...do it!

An MMO is only the "Companies vision" up until the point it goes live. From there on out it consists of the game designers watching how their players interact with the world they created. Any content they develop from that point must be based on observation of their playerbase.

The so called "Watch what they do" attitude. But what CCP has failed at so far is in realizing that the "What they say" part, even though not nearly as important as watching what we do, is sine qua non for game development.

If we are doing sov warfare and pos bashing you can arrive at two different conclusions: That we love doing it; or that we only do it because we have no other option. Only by listening to us will they arrive at the proper conclusion.

So CCP attitude must not be "Watch what they do not what they say" but rather "Watch what they do and CROSS-REFERENCE with what they say".

The world is a community of idiots doing a series of things until it explodes and we all die.

As a communication student I have to say that on the communication part CCP is doing it right because allot of companies actually don't have this many people interacting directly with his costumers. I am talking about people that aren't from the sales/marketing and communication department. And It is funny to see that like half of the community (or less because people that enjoy the game won't post threads about it) complain about the game and the other half tells the first group to stfu. Their is a real connection between the people of CCP and the players and people actually know who the developers are. I just have to mention the word 'Zulu' and everyone would know which person I am talking about.

Another thing that people fail to notice is that allot of CCP employees play the game and have to deal with the same problems as we do.

Neither does CCP, most of the time. And even when they do, the problem is that they're not actually communicating all that much.

And just because some companies are worse than CCP doesn't mean CCP are doing it right. It's not nearly as dichotomous as that. Yes, after the summer's fiasco, they are interacting more with the community, but whether this brief exchange is the beginning of communication or whether one party is just making sounds has yet to be seen.

…except that it is often quite blatantly obvious from their statements that they don't. Either they don't play, or they don't play the same kind of game as the players since they are quite explicitly unaware of the issues being discussed. People don't fail to notice it — quite the opposite. They just call BS on the notion in many instances since it is quite apparent that the person on the other side has very little experience with the game mechanics and in-game situation in question.

Feedback and issues isn't one of them? Take a look at those threads you created yourselves in the Information Portal. Not a single CCP Community team member was seen there communicating in weeks.

One thing they mention over and over is that they are currently in a planning phase. We just have to wait if all our problems are covered when they publish it.

Another thing mentioned over and over again in those threads is that people type elaborate posts about bugs that are in the current program and there's absolutely no reply from CCP whatsoever. They didn't even respond to my childish and succesful attempts at evading the profanity filter. Planning phase or not, don't create those threads if you're not going to read them or respond to constructive feedback in them. And ther is a LOT of constructive feedback in there, every QA's wet dream. (translation for CCP: QA = Quality Assurance, you should try it some time)

It's really cute to have all those devs running around on the forums suddenly (I wonder how they manage to find time for those visits while they're so busy planning), but completely ignoring threads that are mentioned in the official patch notes is not really good communication in my book.

It's not really over-used until it has served its purpose. They have started to say things that could mean things are now moving in the right direction, but have nothing to show for it yet.

Until they do, whacking them over the head with their own arrogance is quite justified.
