anti inflation but pro price rise?

I noticed that a lot of people were crying about there being too much isk in the game coming from many sources such as incursions and missioning and that this was causing inflation in the game and that something needed to be done to combat this. Now that commodity prices have drastically risen and there is indeed inflation it seems like the same people are speaking of the virtues of this price adjustment, how it gives combat more meaning and so on and so forth.

Now my question is isn't this a bit counter intuitive? Or were people never actually against inflation and were misusing the word and were instead against people accumulating wealth?

The inflation of the money supply was always there. Minerals were being kept down by over supply from drone drops and rat loot. Now mineral prices can rise to the level they should be, and mining will more or less settle at income partity with ISK generating activities. Prices will of course bounce around for a while. Guessing where equilibrium is and buying below that and selling above that is the same game as ever.

Traders like it because, when equilibrium is sure to go up, bad choices made when getting in early, are eliminated. Risk, reward and all that, virtualy no risk with a lot of reward is always welcomed.

There is no way to stop it now, to many people deeply involved, Move with the wave, not against it, at-least short mid term, even if you think its wrong.

'Cost-push' inflation by the high mineral-prices will be countered by more players going mining.

EVE's economy doesn't have a good counter for monetary inflation.

In my opinion, there are two kinds of inflations - the 'bad' and the 'good' one ;-)

A) 'Bad' Inflation because of
* isk faucets are much bigger compared to isk sinks

B) 'Good' Inflation because of
* increased activity in the winter (like every winter)
* increased activity because of Crucible
* possible increased activity with Inferno in early summer
* changes in game mechanics like the drone-nerf
* bot-banning

I think more than 90% of the inflation during the last months are of type B. Thus, nothing to worry about.

Another thing to look at is that Inferno will be adding in some new isk sinks:

  • Datacores will require an isk payment either to the FW LP store or the research agent you're getting them from
  • War dec cost will be scaled with the size of the corp - but this could end up being less expensive overall than current. Depends on how willing dec'ers are to dec large corps and precisely how they scale the fees. --Interesting sidenote: If smaller corps are cheaper to war dec, it should act as an incentive for people to get into larger corps, so we might see a reduction in single person corps. Safety in numbers and all....
  • Mercenary Marketplace - Taxes from the contracts
  • Maybe some others I can't think of right now....


I don't think that those combined are nearly enough to curb the massive influx of isk we have right now, let alone the new drone bounties. But, I've also heard talk about them thinking about hiking the transaction taxes and reducing bounties by 10% across the board, so that might have more of an impact.

ISK Inflation is caused by too many ISK faucets.

Commodities getting scarcer, instead, is just a market equilibrium shift, it has nothing to do with inflation.
Prices would rise even in we had been in the deflationary times, because stuff is just getting rarer.
