I came back after another break around 4 months ago. A month or so after being back, I was roaming in the belts and I see a Ret wreck. I check the owner, 2 month noob. Beside the wreck is an Exeq wreck. Next belt, a Cruiser wreck. All the same 2 month noob. He is still logged in, odd really after losing 3 ships and only being 2 months old. So I go get a blackade and I salvage the wrecks, reflip his cans so he can get his ore and stuff. The griefers do thier best to bait me, whatever I have been here 7 years. You don't do anything I don't want you to. So all is done, he is out 3 ships, I try to explain to him that you can't win, don't fight back. He's new, he has some attitude, thinks he can take on the Universe. I log out and do some Jita stuff. 2 Hrs or so later I am back in the system and I see a second Exeq. I ignored it but put him on watch list. He was off line. 2 months later, he is still off line. Griefed out of the game.

I've had the chance to experience this hundreds of times over 7 years in EVE. I have also had the chance to experience meeting people who were not griefed out of the game. All but 2 cases, those people sucked at EVE. They never got in to anything bigger than a Ret or a Myrm or a Harbi. They would do level 2 missions or mine in thier Ret and they all lasted a year maybe a year and a half. In one case a guy actually stayed around the same, 18 months and in that time he missioned and made around 2 billion, got a CNR had a whole fleet of Ravens, Drakes, lots of nice stuff. He of course got bored too though and as I said, 18 months was his cap and he quit, never to be seen again.

I don't pretend to be all seeing or able to scale EVE but chances are if I have seen something 100 times it has happened 10,000 more I suspect. So, noob comes to EVE, gets griefed out of the game in 2 Months you guys get $35? Noob comes to EVE and is allowed to be unimportant and lasts 12-18 months, you get $185 to $275. I think we can all agree, most EVE people are OK people, they aren't here to be hatefull. They PvP, they be destructive, they have fun. Maybe at most, 2000 people will truly miss the ability to grief unabated. You at CCP on the other hand have missed out over 10 years on anywhere from 4 million to 50 million dollars in revenue because people are being griefed right out of the game. I watched an Interview from Machina yesterday where a CCP guy talked about business models. Show me the business model that says you turn down millions to tens of millions of dollars to accomodate an extreme minority?

To be clear, if you don't care, I sure as hell don't. I could not care less if I wanted to. It's your game. I'm just here for the light show. While it kind of bothers me that those people never got thier year of EVE it isn't something I lose sleep over. I'm sure they are playing something but I thought I would share the obvious with you after playing this game for 7 years.

Did you have a point in there somewhere?

It's mostly those who jump from "let's talk about the consequences of the griefing culture" to "you want to make this game like WoW"

The folks doing this are just forum trolls, or possibly people with a severe mental handicap.

Wow, seems like that "take on the universe" attitude is contagious eh?

We all get griefed at some point when we begin and honestly, most of us have done some griefing ourselves. This is what makes eve grand.

To be honest with ya, if I had simply done missions or mined, then I would of been out of eve in a week. If you want a safe strictly pve game, then there are much better "amusement park mmos" then eve on the market. Enjoy the sandbox for what it is.

I think this is because WoW is the perfect example of your typical "amusement park MMO". You are on the path that Blizzard sets for you. Nothing wrong with enjoying WoW if that is your thing, but I'm not going to go on the WoW forums and whine that it isn't 'sandboxy' enough. Eve is a sandbox, for the most part anything goes, WoW is somewhat the opposite. If you don't like the sandbox, then I agree, go play WoW, or some other MMO. Don't try to change the game that we love for what it is.

Yet the actual complaint is about subscription volume and how CCP needs to cater to a wider audience. Which puts mainstream please the masses WoW directly in this topics headlights.
Anything that makes living easier in EvE (which in turn would make the game more "available" to people) is a dueling glove ***** slap to the face of those who deem this game as the hardcore game.

In this game death doesn't even mean anything. Goonies use it as a means of fast transportation. Is it the warfare that's hardcore? No... because nullsec has been a giant NAP-fest for years.

Is it the missions? Mining?

Nothing about EVE is really hardcore... it's just a game. Some people get autistic about it and think it's a bigger deal than it is and that they need to be as big a douchebags in EVE as possible because they are compensating for something.

Uh. Lots of people use it as a means of transportation. Also, death really doesn't mean anything in eve. That is kind of the point of the capsuleer.

A friend of mine had almost the same experience. I got him into an extended trial period. Because he was in a different TZ altogether I couldn't watch his back all the time. He isn't going to get a regular account. HTFU,LEET,NICHE GMPLY doesn't translate into $$s. I don't know what CCP needs to do but if they do keep losing players pretty much there won't be Eve.

Well dang, we aren't making it up. CCP agrees

But when people come on whining about griefing, it seems that they want this instead.

People keep talking about the death of eve due to the playerbase. But fail to forget eve is one of the longest running MMOs. I guess somebody, somewhere may like this game.

Yeah, the ever increasing upward curve of subscriptions that has never happened in any other mmo for 10 years running will be the death of EVE.

You know this game really isn't growing right now. Most of the growth is either old accounts resubbing on alts, and their isn't much of that. CCP has creditors that aren't happy with them and may have public shareholders in the near future. Eventually, somebody who deals with real life isk is going to require CCP to show better growth numbers.

It would be a very good thing if CCP understood the extent of their new player retention period now. Would you rather be dealing with this with the current folks at CCP or wait until their is a change in management/control and god knows who we'll have to deal with.

So your proposal is trade one playerbase that has kept the game alive since 2003 for another one? Methinks I need more business schooling.

Truth of the matter is that you can never please everyone. I do remember recently reading that CCP is actually doing well money wise and made like 66 mil last year.

The reality is this game is a niche game but at the same time its also one of the most honest games I know of in that its cold, brutal, dark and has real consequences..... basically its real life after you take all the bullshit out of it about how you should be nice and friendly and kind. Its the real world put into a game on a very hardcore level as everything you see in game you see in the real world, period. Now most people dont want to be reminded of such a reality as they are forced to live in that cold brutal world already and want to escape into a fantasy world, a happy unicorn hugging, everyone wins, no real death or pain sort of delusion instead of being thrust right back into reality again.

So for 90% of the population Eve isnt an escape its a hellish reality that they live on a daily level in their real lives. Null sec? Like that bad office job where your boss ***** on you but hey you collect a check. High sec? Oh sure its KINDA safe but that suicide gankers gonna take your purse, your identity, credit cards and go for a joy ride in your car. Low sec? AHAHAHAHA! dont even have to explain THAT one to anyone. This game isnt fun in that regard cuz things hurt here. Yeah you get some really good friends, lots of fun but I mean really. Its a game thats about being as dark as you can get and then going deeper down that rabbit hole when most people want free love and happy sunshine rainbow unicorns and my lil pony.

CCP built the game that way and yup itll cater to only a select portion of society on a psychological and personal level cuz as an "escape" or fantasy thats not what most people have in mind to relax or chill out to after a hard days in the concrete jungle of real life. Twisted

Have you heard anything I've said?

You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?

That's right.

It may not be much compared to Blizzard. But then again, they don't have to maintain half of the upkeep or technical support costs. But apparently, they are making a profit. I thought this is what businesses did?

Yeah, CCP isn't all driving to work in Ferraris like certain other companies. Their business will die without their Ferrari backbone.
