Distress Beacon

Hey m8's,

While doing missions I found that it may be useful for some to use a distress beacon of some sort. This beacon will act like a cyno field where anyone in system can lock on and warp to it. Everyship can be equipped with a beacon.

The only downsides I can see to this idea are it can/may be abused or not need because some battles may be too short.

Sometimes people panic on TS and forget to say who they are and where they are while under attack. I have witnessed cases where the communication was the problem and it was a loss because of mere seconds.

To help combat griefers, the distress beacon may only activate if attacked by npcs.

And/Or

The distress beacon cannot be used if:

1. A player from the same corporation as you is attacking your ship.

2. A player in the same fleet as you is attacking your ship.

3. A player with good or excellent standings with you is attacking your ship.

4. The rate of damage is low (like 1 or 2 small turrets) since pirates wouldn't want to bait a damage ship or are unlikely to.

Information from the distress beacon could be announced in local chat so players can find out if it is a pirate or a 10.0 sec mission runner needing help.

Added information like a popup window to tell you; " there are known pirates in the same system as the beacon, would you like to continue to warp to the distress beacon?" or "There were x amount of ships destroyed in this system in the last hour, would you like to continue warp?"

Maybe expanding on this idea to add distress beacon upgrade module to add to structure resistances/boost for a short period of time to prevent a quick end to your ship life.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Please don't hesitate to be constructive.

Cheers,

-Unk

I'd love to see people painting giant 'GANK ME' targets on themselves. That, and bait, is all this would ever be.

Maybe exclusive to factional warfare, and only people in your faction could lock onto and warp to it

Otherwise, this wouldn't be used for what it's intended for

Oh wait, I got an idea, how about only people above a 0.0 security status can use it. That would prevent criminal jackasses from warping in and ganking you.

Also, anyone who uses the distress beacon to warp to you can't attack you for a minimum of 15 minutes and can't use warp jamming on you. Completely prevent it, but EVE is a game of risk, so maybe not quite all of this. But at least the timer, maybe with a shorter time, to prevent idiots from using it against what it's intended for.

I think this idea has some potential, after quite a bit of ironing out.

Either way, I think this game needs a better way to bring players together. Especially for higher-level missions. This game doesn't exactly encourage interaction much. Maybe it would bring some more nice players into EVE, I notice a lot of people in this game are absolute a** holes.

+1, I like the faction warfare part.

I, too, would enjoy this. Sometimes when ganking ratters, miners, industrialists or whoever in hostile space, it takes a second to coax the initiator into putting wwwws into fleet chat. This can make it take a few extra seconds to warp our DPS onto the target!

If the target itself would just broadcast its location to our gang, that would be much more convenient. Also maybe it would make all the targets' friends feel guiltier as they warp off to their POSes / stations. At the very least it would take the old excuse-- "Sorry we didn't back you up, bro. We didn't know where you were!"-- away.
