Gaming controllers and EVE

Hey all,
I just recently started using an N52 gaming controller with EVE. Basically, I set up the top, middle, bottom lines of buttons to be the hot keys for high, mid, low slot items and then used the D-Pad for targeting, recalling drones, etc.

I then got to thinking about how it has Macro features built in to the N52 software to do multiple key presses for a single button on the controller.

Should I be worried about using this controller with EVE with the anti-botting stuff? It didn't dawn on me until I read CCP Sreegs latest Dev blog that this might be perceived as macroing or something?

I haven't set it up to do multiple in game functions with a single key press. Basically I'm just doing "F1", "Alt-F1", etc, for activating a single item each.

Is there an outline of what is acceptable and what isn't?

Thanks!

Nope, hotkeys and stuff like that are fine (even hotkeys for multiple keystrokes). The issue is once you start automating it to the point where you're not really doing anything. Ask yourself this, am I playing the game or is my gamepad playing the game? If you're the one playing the game, you'll be fine.

To be safe ...

You can petition the GM's - telling them exactly what you want to do and see what they say about it. Then - if someone gives you crap about that in the future - you can point at your reply from the GM's saying that it was OK.

However - they have said in the past ... somewhere ... that it is OK to use programmable keyboards which combined key strokes.

There has been a good bit of discussion of such as the Logitech G15 keyboard (which if you do a google search on EVE Online Logitech G15 you will see ...).

But I couldn't find a comment from the Dev's saying such devices are OK - though I believe there is one ... somewhere ...

The primary concern with Bots - isn't over programmable input devices - but over Actual programs - that entirely control the operation of a space ship.

The rule of thumb seems to be - that if you have to sit at the keyboard and press a key to make something happen - it's OK.

That said - you can always cover your ass but petitioning it as I mentioned above.

Thanks for the replies!

Yeah, the GM route sounds like a good idea!

Better safe than sorry! :)

Thanks again, and fly safe.

Anything that gives an unfair advantage is not allowed.

Keep this in mind when setting-up multiple key macros.

Look up videos of the fanfest 2011 security presentation, some people asked about macros and software that went beyond the scope of what's provided in a gaming keyboard. Don't quote me exactly but I think it was said that so long as you are the start of the inout and that any input software you use dosent automaticaly respond to data from the eve servers then its allowed. There are some grey areas when it comes to controlling multipule clients with a single macro stroke but I believe that was covered in the video I mentioned.

I asked GM Haggis a while back. Simple button presses upon you pressing a button on the G15/N52 is fine, setting up a macro where there's repeated/timed actions (possibly with a loop) is NOT fine.

Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude.
