To ban or not to ban. That's the question.

I think this comparision is worth an examination.

yeah but Ginger didn't save ccp in 2011 during the jita riots over the nex store or controls the largest blob of retards and uneducated pubbies in any game community.

And neither did mittens, he just likes to try to take credit for it when CCP already had their layoffs and refocusing plans in motion.

Sad really that there are still players that are dumb enough, or just brainwashed enough to believe mittens "saved" CCP.

There's a million angry citizens looking down their tubes..at me.

Spock: *checking tricorder* It seems to be a large quadruped Captain, and by examing the surroundings *looks over open fields* which I belive to be a draft animal on this planet.
Kirk: That is...interesting...Spock....Bones...do you...concur.

I guess you conveniently missed the part where mittens incited other players (in a live venue that CCP provided) to harass a player with the intent that the player kill himself in real life.

Quote:

"Incidentally, if you want to make the guy kill himself, his name is [redacted], he has his own corp. Find him."

But keep on with the denials and spin to try to pass this off as no big deal. It makes it much easier to identify who is drinking the kool-aide.

Even putting aside all the debate about intent and semantics that's still a pretty large divide you're trying to bridge.

Harassment in game (regardless of someone's mental state) always comes with the option of walking away.

A death threat doesn't.

I'm not justifying what Mittens did but those two events are not comparable.

Obviously the only way to solve this dispute is a drunken gladiator match to the death.

Also, Mittani should be banned after the match.

Its wasnt even that. It was a drunken joke made by a guy wearing a wizard hat.

It was an encouragement to harass someone, and this encouragement was made by a sociopath -- while wearing a wizard hat -- and just so happens to have a lot of influence. You may not see the difference, but most everyone else does.

You might take into account CCP is complicit in Mitt's drunken tirade. According to the media laws in Iceland, not only are they complicit, they are legally liable for having allowed Mitt access to their media to perform his tirade. What makes it difficult for CCP is it can be well documented that they knew what sort of person Mitt is, and they found him amusing. It can even be said they encouraged him to do what he did. CCP can't afford to pretend EVE isn't real. In the eyes of their local constabulatory, EVE is very real. So are the behinds in the sling. Think about it. They ban Mitt for life. Mitt sues. Boom

This is why you exercise CONTROL. Once competant authority peels back enough layers, they'll come to realize CCP has only exercised token control and in very arbitrary ways. This adds up to IRRESPONSIBILITY, something the authorities frown upon.

Suffice to say CCP is now engaged in damage control 'cause they let their little attack puppy off the leash.

'Course you might also say that CCP wanted to just get a bit of their own back after The Mittani got up in their grill last year. Twisted

So yeah, layers upon layers... or maybe just not

I might suggest simple human nature. People seem far more willing to punish an anonymous stranger than they are someone with whom they've had even a passing acquaintance. We seem to want to believe that they people in our lives are of good and upstanding character, and we'll try and justify away their imperfections to protect our own view of the world.

As I recall several senior CCP employees are former Goonswarm members (CCP Soundwave? CCP Screegs?) and from his 6th CSM role I'm certain that he had contact with many other employees. So one of the actors in this little digital drama was a known quantity, that the team passing judgement had interacted with and probably liked, while the other was simply some random butt-hole on the Internet.

I've seen people defend a convicted child pornographer, not out of any great personal affection, but because they had worked side-by-side with the guy for a few years. They just couldn't grasp that they didn't really know the guy and that he could be such a terrible person. (PLEASE NOTE: This is not some innuendo about the current situation, merely a personal anecdote to demonstrate what I'm talking about)

So it would seem that, like it or not, we are hardwired to mitigate the personal failings of the people we know and be far less charitable to those we don't.

Mittens saved CCP from the Jita riots? How did I miss that? Oh, I guess it was his insult to CCP in his sig.

Actually, I took Hilmar's advice - I watched what CCP did and not what they said. - Just as I did in this newest Debacle.

I'm still parsing thru all the crap I missed while out of town to find out if mittens kept his word and resigned from from the CSM.

I thought his delay from his announcement to each new day was his hope to barter his CSM role for a reduction of a perma ban from CCP. And I'm not far enough into the reading of all the chest beating to see if that is what it looks like.

This has certainly been a great example of why the entire CSM is a bad idea. CCP's rep rides on the behavior of drunks in wizard hats.

CCP - HIRE A MARKETING FIRM TO QUERY THE MEMBERSHIP ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT AND THE DIRECTION THEY WANT FOR EVE.

A RIGGED ELECTION WITH 16% OF THE PLAYERS EVEN VOTING HAS NO VALIDITY!

oh yeah, I used caps, make a big deal out of it instead of addressing the issue.

Remember, the total number of votes for mittens just represents the margin of error for a study of the entire player population at this size. That any study of a group the size of this player base woud likely have a sampling error equalling the number of votes mittens received. The sampling error means the results could go that far either way and still be considered a feasible representation. Basically, that means the votes for mittens were statistically insignificant - just as the votes for all the others are equally insignificant.

E: Bye Bye Mittens!
