Have you tried auto-linking, writing the name in chat, highlight it and auto-link as character

I havn't tried myself, but this could be side-effect of new awesome(tm) search engine, which is not allways uptodate. Its database is updated periodically, but I don't know how long that period is.

just tried that. no go..still doesn't show up. char is about 12 hours old..there's something in the new search system that incurs a slight delay in new chars showing up, but this seems like an excessively long time to wait..

This blog tells about new search engine (after internationalization stuff):
http://community.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&nbid=28551

short quote from there:
Quote:
Adding more languages means there is more text to search which is taxing on our database infrastructure. To remedy that we now index all the data in all the languages in a third party full text search engine called Sphinx (http://sphinxsearch.com/). This creates a unified interface which we can expose any data to that we want to be searchable. We have two types of data which need indexing, static and dynamic data. Static data is the data which does not change during runtime, such as solarsystem, agent and type names. We index that data once. But dynamic data is data that gets created or updated during runtime, such as player owned structures and ship names. We need to re-index that data and update our search indexes. We periodically re-index that data which means it's not as real time as if we'd search our database, but that's a fair tradeoff for being able to search faster and with minimal cost to database resources.

just tried that. no go..still doesn't show up. char is about 12 hours old..there's something in the new search system that incurs a slight delay in new chars showing up, but this seems like an excessively long time to wait..

Try sending evemail from your new character to your current character - then click character name in received evemail.

EDIT: I think this should bypass search engine, since likely evemail includes character ID which is used directly.

we had the same issue today with a friend that joined eve online very early this morning.

Well he did not show up in the game at all..so I could not open a convo to him.

Still now, you cannot link his name to a character.

I added him via evegate to my contacts and still the game client did not know him.

I told him then to contact me and now he appears in my list...however you cannot link his name.

Even more funny, he joined my corp and was listed 3 times in the member list and roles list, but this seems to be fixed as it is no longer the case.
