“It takes seventy-two hours,” a bored looking lab coat tells me, “for all cognitive, memory and motor functions to be mapped and routed through the neuro-interface socket implanted in your head.” The NIS is a fountain of metal spouting out my skull. Bulky and uncomfortable, the weight of it makes it difficult to keep my head up straight. “A temporary solution until the procedure is complete,” says the coat when I complain.

“And what happens when the procedure is complete?” I ask.

He gives me a look of practiced annoyance that says this will be less painful for both of us if I stop asking questions. I shut up and with a weary sigh he goes back to work.

It’s hours before I’m allowed to return to my quarters. I don’t see it until I’m almost on top of it. Lying in the middle of the floor is a gun, and underneath it, a handwritten note with just two words on it: KILL YOURSELF.

Wow, I forgot about the DUST chronicles.

This basically proves that a capsuleer can survive the indoctrination without any problems right? It's just the matter of killing one's original self (through suicide; assisted or otherwise) is simply some kind of sick ritual it seems. Maybe if they're so concerned about the cost of the NIS with the wealth surrounding capsuleers it could be safe to assume that we could have more compact models, with the core of the machinery being inside our capsules.

This opens so many doors, I'll just say I'm glad I was indoctrinated before the casual original self suicide became commonplace.

No the actual problem with pod pilots and the reason there are so "few" compared to the population is the fact that the interface between the human brain/spine and the pod can result in a sort of catatonic state when you are unplugged. See the Short story"wet grave" for this. This is also a good reason not to unplug every time you enter a station

The resurrection and cloning procedures are fairly minimal issues. Although they might result in a certain loss of identity as portrayed in the chronicle Prosopagnosia. They are common place now. At least in militiayr/capsuleer/imperial :) circles...
