Tips for 0.0 living

I'm pretty knew to living out in null...actually two days old to be exact. I've got a good alliance to run with, but I'm finding myself making critical mistakes that cost me my ship or pod. For example:

1. Attacking an officer rat by myself (pop!)
2. Flying right into a gate camp, only to be informed after waking up in a fresh clone the system I was in is usually "hot"

What other tips and tricks are there that a newbie to null should know about? General stuff is good, I can ask the guys about region specific stuff later.
