Howdy all, I'm going to be stuck in a place without internet for a long while. At the moment, I'm trying to track down some offline games similar to EVE. I got Sins of a Solar Empire which is like an RTS version of EVE, but I'm trying to find moar.

Any Suggestions?

nexus the jupiter incident. Tactical space game where you only control a few ships but you get to fit them out. Also has thing like permanent death to any ship that gets destroyed, cloaking, scanning etc. Pretty good story aswell and really hard.

Unfortunetly there aren't many new ones around. Heard a new Elite is in development but haven't heard anything recently and a game called infinity is in developemnt but seems years away. Anyway, have you ever tried X3? It's sorta like EVE but twitched based. Homeworld 2 is also good but it's a RTS and is also a little old. Most of the other space sim games I've played are pretty poor :'(.

X3 is pretty much EvE offline. X3 Terran Conflict has multiple smaller plotlines to follow and has been mostly scrubbed from the bugs in the few years it's been out. X3 Albion Prelude hasn't got much of a plot to follow but it has some improved and useful features compared to the TC and a few more systems. There's also the X: Rebirth coming out later this year.

Star Control II could be something of interest. Spaceships, mining, exploration, combat, diplomacy. A modernized version goes with the name of The Ur-Quan Masters. It's a timeless classic every self-respecting sci-fi gamer should try.

While this isn't exactly what you are looking for, you could try Dwarf Fortress too. It's a roguelike-of-sorts about sending your dwarven settlers to surive and carve a fortress in the wilderness. The learning cliff is very much like EvE's though, if not worse. It's not forgiving and there is no tutorial. However it's very much fun after learning what the stuff does and it has unlimited replayability thanks to randomly generated maps and a huge selection of stuff to do. Why I'm mentioning this? Because it's high on people's "If you could play only one game ever again, what would it be" lists, not to mention it's small and free making it a perfect addition for longer trips. And stories like this are just awesome.

This post was rated "C" for capsuleer.

If you want a game that is really in depth then go for the X series.

You start out small with a single ship, and over time can begin purchasing capital ships, factories, bases, etc, and even crew them with pilots who gain experience.

Hell you can even have a cargo fleet flying between points to make you extra money. It's very fleshed out, and can take a bit of getting used to. It's a lot like the old freelancers games, and is first person. Either mouse or joystick can be used, and my general rules of thumb is to use joysticks when piloting fighters, and a mouse for the big ships such as frigates and larger.

Carriers can be outfitted with AI packages, and fighter wings... Hell you can technically own a system and make money out of your stations there and have a security force set to patrol the area.

Two flavors of X3.

First is reunion, which delves more into a single player storyline aspect

Then is terran conflict, which is IMHO the better choice with new features, and much more of a sandbox feel.

Then there is an expansion that was recently released to bridge the gap between x3 and x rebirth. (Rebirth is not yet released)

Another X3 post-

It is highly moddable. In fact, I can't even play the vanilla game the mods add so much. The developer supports the modding effort fully and even makes a few of the mods available on their site. The amount and scope of the mods are practically limitless, from new ships to new functions that can enhance any part of the game. And it is a sandbox, so the sky is the limit. I have spent hundreds of hours playing X2, X3:Reunion and X3:Terran Conflict. Not so many hours playing Albion prelude yet, but I have only had it for a couple of weeks.

Sig blah blah blah blah

My vote is for Star Control 2 mentioned above. I just downloaded this yesterday having never played it before and looking for a good space exploration sim.

Was up till 4AM playing it. Day job is sucking right now due to no sleep but I plan on putting in another 8 hours or so when I get home tonight. Sleep be damned! Plenty of time for sleep when I die!

homeworld 2. its a 3d RTS in space. it works with windows 7 64 bit.

the single player is pretty fun, and if you do skirmish vs AI its good too because the AI isn't completely stupid, 3v3 medium AI is fun

+1 for Nexus and Ur-Quan Masters.

Try FreeSpace 2 if you want to see what EVE's drones/fighters have to put up with.

Freespace 2 is good too, fantastic in fact :)

9 years old now, Freelancer is also a great space sim, i think it's quite similar to EVE PVE missioning. Good fun though.

HW was a great game. Loved playing that.

Here is a much simpler RTS called Star Command Revolution. Pretty good description in the link.

http://free-game-downloads.mosw.com/abandonware/pc/strategy_games/games_so_sy/star_command_revolution.html

The game is free but the download will cost you $5.95 (PayPal or CC). It has been a while since I played this but I will start it up every once in a while. Good for a few hours amusement.
